Why is my dog aggressive to puppy after surgery? Pain or guarding?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Husky | Female | unspayed | 1 year old | 55 lbs

My 1 yr old female dog recently had a hip replacement. She has been on crate rest for the last few weeks. Since we brought her back, she has been very protective of her crate and has been lashing out at our 5 mo old male puppy when he gets close. I don't understand why, as they got along well together before surgery.

There are lots of possible causes, but the most important one could be pain. I would consult with your vet and make sure her pain medications are all at the best doses for her currently. Alternatively, she could be developing some resource guarding. She has gone through a stressful procedure and she may be feeling more sensitive and protective of herself and her spaces. For now, I would keep the puppy away so he doesn’t get hurt.
