Why is my dog aggressive on methylprednisolone? Is the dose too high?

This is a common reaction to steroids. If the steroids were only for his itching you may try to decrease his dose in half to see if you see improvement in the side effects but still see relief in his allergies. But I would still call your vet to let them know he is having this type of reaction. If he was prescribed steroids for an auto immune disorder I would contact your vet before adjusting the dose. Dexamethasone generally wears off within 36 hours or so, so if this is the problem, she should be back to her normal self after that.

I normally do not exceed 60mg daily regardless of the size of the dog just because of the potential side effects such as gastrointestinal ulceration and bleeding as well as the undesirable side effects you describe. I recommend you bring up your concerns to the prescribing veterinarian who knows the case well, to taper his dose down slowly. It is important to not discontinue or lower too much this medication acutely as problems can arise with this approach. For now, look for any evidence of gastrointestinal bleeding such as black, tarry stools. If observed, let your veterinarian know right away. Good luck with your boy!

Poor Maggie. I think there has been a misunderstanding. They probably gave 20mg (milligrams) which is equal to either 0.5mL (milliliters) or 1.0mL of depo-medrol depending on the concentration your vet carries. The general dose that most vets use is 20mg depomedrol per cat every 8 weeks as needed. I seriously doubt anyone would give 20mL of this drug. Also, it could be wearing off quicker if there are more allergens causing her skin to act up. With it being the changing of the seasons, this very well could be the issue. Also make sure she is on a high quality flea preventative. One flea bite can cause a major allergic reactions in cats with her problem. If she needs another depomedrol shot, I would talk to your vet and see if they would be willing to repeat the injection as early as 6-8 weeks during high allergy season. That is a low dose, however, there is no set time frame for you to see side effects. Some dogs are more sensitive and develop side effects quickly, and some dogs are on it longer before this happens. Side effects include excessive thirst and hunger, panting, developing a pot-bellied appearance, and losing overall muscle tone. It is not a medication that is ideal for long-term use. Allergies can be very frustrating to manage. If you have a veterinary dermatologist in your area, you may consider allergy testing and even allergy shots to try and make Lily more comfortable. If he is having side effects then you could skip today. Since it is just a short course of steroids, it shouldn’t be a problem to miss a day. You could also give him 1/2 the dose and see if he has less side effects with a lower dose. Hopefully, the itching has improved. If he needs long term allergy medications then you could talk to your vet about Cytopoint or Apoquel.
