Why is my dog aggressive towards our cat and dog? Is it medical?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | spayed | 80 lbs

Lily is a 3 year old lab who we believe is mixed with Great Pyrenees. We have been noticing a slowly growing issue where she is occasionally becoming aggressive towards our other dog & cat. If she is sleeping & either of them are walking near her she will growl. The other day she was laying in the living room & our cat walked by & she snapped at the cat & had her by the neck flopping her around like wild animals do when going in for the “kill”. Could this be a neurological issue?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Lily. I would start by having her see her veterinarian. She will need a thorough examination and laboratory work. Most cases of behavior changes are due to an underlying medical condition. Pain somewhere in her body could be causing her to act out aggressively. A neurological condition is less likely. If a medical problem is not identified, then anxiety should be considered. Medication options can be discussed if this is thought to be the case. I hope this information helps!
