My dog is accidentally pregnant. Will she survive and how can I help?

In a normal [pregnancy](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/pregnancy/), there is no reason to believe that a healthy bitch would die during pregnancy or parturition (delivery). Of course any pregnancy can have risks no matter at what age and sometimes, [delivery](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/dystocia/) can be impeded, which can cause problems which, if not addressed in time can cause the death of the bitch and/or litter. If you have any reason to believe that your dog has problems during pregnancy or labor (foul discharge from the vulva, fever, lethargy, anorexia, general malaise) take her to a vet immediately for a complete exam.

Unless there is a very large difference in size between your male dog and your female dog with the female being very small, there should be no problem if she gets pregnant. However, if you do not want puppies nor want to breed her later on I suggest you discuss spaying with your vet. There are so many puppies out there needing a new home, there is not point in adding to that. Being pregnant now will basically cut short her puppy time as well.

Hello, I’m not sure if there was supposed to be a photograph of the male dog attached to this post or not. If you have a large male who breeds with a small female, there is always a concern that she will not be able to have the puppies and will need a C-section. Any small female dog who is having puppies should have radiographs done after day 45 to see how many babies are expected. If you do not want her to have a litter, I recommend calling the veterinarian and discussing getting her spayed ASAP. Some dogs can have a shot to stop the pregnancy but there can be some serious side effects to that. Getting her spayed will eliminate an accidental pregnancy in the future. Pregnancy always carries a certain risk of complications and in a growing puppy they are more at risk of getting low blood sugar, or low blood calcium. These can both cause serious problems and be life-threatening in certain circumstances. This could also cause some orthopedic problems in Wrigley. My best recommendation would be to have Wrigley spayed to prevent a possible pregnancy. There are also other ways for a vet to terminate a pregnancy if you don't want her spayed, but don't want to risk the pregnancy. If you are interested in having her carry the puppies (assuming she did get pregnant) to term, then I highly recommend you consult a veterinarian to implement measures to prevent some of the complications I mentioned above. If she’s pregnant she may need a C-section if the pups are too large to come out naturally. I recommend a veterinary exam and ultrasound to see if she’s pregnant and perhaps an X-ray when she’s close to delivering to see the size and number of pups. There isn't a safe method to terminate pregnancy other than spaying them. There also isn't a way to guarantee that Millie will be able to have the puppies. I would recommend discussing this scenario with Millie's vet. The vet can help you determine the best course of action. If she is pregnant and you elect not to have her spayed, it would be best to save money for a possible emergency c-section and know the available vet should an emergency arise.
