Heatstroke is a life threatening emergency andany dog experiencing it should be taken to see a veterinarian immediately. Signs of heatstroke include; •shade seeking •difficulty breathing •panting •bright red tongue •weakness •depression •vomiting or diarrhoea •coma •shock With Heatstroke cases the sooner a dog is seen the better the outcome. Hello. There is a very wide range of effects that can happen when a pet over heats. Mild effects may just be heavy panting that resolves within 10-15 minutes after getting into a cool environment. Severe overheating, called heat stroke, can cause vomiting, diarrhea, aspiration pneumonia, tissue damage, organ failure, brain damage & death. Watch your dog carefully in the heat, make sure there is plenty of water to drink ( & is non-spillable ) & cool down in ( a kiddie pool ) , plenty of shade, cool dirt to dig in, & never tether or tie a dog out where they can wrap themselves around something. A dog can overheat in as little as 10-15 minutes, so try to never leave a dog outside on very hot days in the afternoon if no one is home to watch. He is most likely getting so got because he is really anxious. Firstly you could use active cooling measures such as letting him sit on a damp towel and damping him slightly with a cloth or sponge. Secondly you could take him to the vet as they may be able to prescribe meds that will help control his anxiety, and thus make him cooler.

Hi! Dogs should not be left outside for more than an hour, but that is subjective. There is no specific time, it varies from dog breed and temperature. A dog outside is hot weather should be supervised and watched for signs of heat stroke or heat exhaustion. These would be panting excessively, collapsing or lethargy, or an elevated rectal temperature. If you and unsure about how hot your dog is getting you can take her temperature but inserting a thermometer about one inch into her rectum. A normal temperature is between 99.5-102.5. If she is getting over 103, she has been out for too long and her time outside should be shorter. Also, some dogs with smushed in faces cannot tolerate the heat well at all, so a few minutes outside being active can cause heat exhaustion. If you suspect that this has occurred in your cat, I would suggest getting Tippy evaluated by a veterinarian immediately because serious organ damage can occur in heat stroke cases. Your veterinarian will need to stabilize Tippy, and then may recommend diagnostic testing to evaluate how her body systems are working (such as blood work). She may require hospitalization depending on the severity as well. We do not recommend leaving any animal unattended in a car in warm weather, even if it doesn't seem "that hot" outside, or even if it is just for a few minutes.

Hello. This is just plain wrong. Even in mild weather, the sun can increase temperatures to dangerous levels. Even if the windows are cracked open a bit. And what about at night? If the temps drop below freezing, how can this poor animal survive? The sheriff is not an animal expert, & in some municipalities, this is a felony. I feel sorry for the dog's owner, he may be just trying to keep his pet, but this is just not in the pet's best interest. If there is a humane society or ASPCA in your area, lodge a complaint with them. Some dogs can learn to adapt to the heat and are better able to handle it (think dogs that work as partners for soldiers in Iraq or Search and Rescue dogs). Signs of heatstroke include: Increased heart rate Excessive panting Increased salivation Bright red tongue Red or pale gums Thick, sticky saliva Depression Weakness Dizziness Vomiting (sometimes with blood) Diarrhea As heatstroke progresses, it can cause seizures, coma, cardiac arrest, and death. Exercising early in the morning during the cooler hours, providing lots of fresh cool water and finding places to exercise in the shade (like a nature trail hike) can help keep your dog cool. Several companies make Cool Coats that reflect heat and funnel it away from your dog. Also, find other ways for your dog to get exercise or even exercise their mind. You would be amazed at how tiring this is for dogs- take a Nosework class and your dog can learn to find different scents and you can practice at home in the house. Pick up a few puzzle toys and let your dog learn to find food and treats in the puzzles. Also, you could see if your dog might enjoy a swim-- even a little splash pool at home can be fun for the dog or some hose play- Don't overdo a dog's can get very sick if they drink too much water when playing.
