Why are Corgi tails short? Is tail docking necessary for them?

Of coarse there are always individual cases where this may be true. However, in general tail docking is cosmetic and not a medical decision. Moly is adorable! Her tail does appear slightly shorter than average and this could have simply been the way that she was born, or related to other trauma. Some kittens experience tail trauma at birth if the umbilical cord is wrapped around the tail, causing part of it to fall off. Other cats can experience broken tails or other injuries that require amputation. Unfortunately, there is no way of determining the cause of Moly's tail condition at this point in time, but I think she's a cutie just the way she is! :-)

Congratulations on your new puppy Mia! Corgis are generally a healthy breed but they can have back issues, be prone to weight gain and have some dental issues. Important things are to feed a high-quality diet and make sure that she does not get heavy as this can strain her back. Get her used to brushing her teeth. You will need to use a dog toothpaste and brush four times or more a week. I recommend a diet such as Royal Canin or Purina pro plan. Lastly, puppies get more vaccines then adult dogs. Make sure to keep up with her vaccine schedule and avoid parks and other public areas until she is fully vaccinated. Due to the concern for back injuries with the breed, you may also try to train her to use stairs to get often on furniture. Puppies are much easier to train then adult dogs who get used to jumping up and down off of furniture. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Docking the tail is a surgical procedure, it is mainly done as a cosmetic surgery which i as many vets are against it if it has no medical reason for it. i really do not recommend having it done for cosmetic purposes, it is an unnecessary surgery that will put your dog at risk and will cause him pain just because some people decided that it has a better look. having it done at 8 weeks is even worse as it is a procedure that needs to be done under full anesthesia and a good-responsible vet will never accept having it done at this age.

It is unfortunately not common practice to dock tails so late in age. Most general practitioners will not perform this procedure unless the pet is less than 2-3 days of age. At this age it is considered an amputation procedure because the bone vertebrae have completely formed, as well as the nerve endings, and is a lot more costly (average ~$500-$1000 depending on your area). You unfortunately will most likely have to discuss amputation with a veterinarian and call around to local clinics in your area to see who is willing to do the procedure. We don't have any websites dedicated to this service, so finding someone is going to be something you will have to ask around for to see who is willing to perform the procedure at this stage.
