My chihuahua puppy is having seizures and won't wake up. What to do?

If Pinky is having muscle tremors or seizures, I would be very concerned that the problem is not epilepsy but rather eclampsia, or "milk fever". This is a life-threatening condition caused by very low blood calcium levels, and is common in toy breed dogs who are nursing large litters. This is a medical emergency, so Pinky needs to be seen by a veterinarian immediately. If you call your regular vet's office, they should have contact information on their voicemail message for your nearest emergency clinic or on-call doctor.

You can try rubbing a small amount of karo syrup on Bruno's gums in case the seizure if from low blood sugar, but he needs immediate medical attention even if the karo seems to help. Seizures in young puppies can be from low blood sugar, congenital liver disease, toxin or other disease. It is important to get medical attention asap as uncontrolled seizures could be fatal.

See how she is after this. With her being so small, her blood sugar could be having difficulties regulating, especially if she is a picky eater or doesn't eat that much. Yes. I would recommend taking her to an emergency veterinarian immediately. She could be having seizures from hypoglycemia which is treatable, but can be fatal if not treated quickly. She could also have a liver shunt or developmental problem with her brain causing seizures. Trauma or ingestion of toxins can cause seizures as well. If she has had that many seizures in a short period there is potential for permanent brain damage. Head to a vet as soon as you can - I’ll be hoping for the best for Daisy!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Dot. She will need to see her veterinarian to determine if she is truly having seizures and if so, the cause of them. Given her age and breed, I am concerned she is experiencing low blood sugar triggering the seizures. If this happens again before she can be seen, apply some Karo syrup to her gums. If this is the case, it should help. You also should have food available to her at all times. This can prevent episodes from happening if it is due to low blood sugar. I hope this information helps!

Usually small breed dogs require to be fed throughout the day every 6 hours or so. However, this could also be due to something else like a toxicity of some kind. Hello. This is unfortunate for you and your puppy. Sometimes, very small toy breed puppies can not regulate their blood sugar and become hypoglycemic, have seizures and neurological issues. If your vet has not monitored his blood glucose- that needs to be done. This can be treated with a high caloric supplement called NutriCal that can be given throughout the day to keep his blood sugar levels in the normal range. The other thing to test for is a liver shunt. This is a congenital malformation of blood vessels that go to and from the liver. If your puppy has a shunt, their liver is usually smaller than normal and cannot perform its normal functions. This can cause toxins to build up and that causes seizures. This disorder can sometimes be corrected with surgery or managed with special diets and medication. If your veterinarian is uncomfortable moving forward , ask to be referred to an internal medicine specialist or even just another general practitioner with more experience with these issues.
