Is chicken and rice a complete diet for my toothless senior dog?

No, this is not a complete and balanced diet for long-term feeding. It's fine to use for a few days here and there, especially if your dog has an upset stomach and needs something bland and tasty, but you should feed a commercial dog food or work with a veterinary nutritionist to put together a balanced home-cooked diet for the long term, if you prefer.

This would not be a complete diet for Peanut and would not meet all her nutritional needs. I'd recommend a high quality dog food like Hill's Science Diet or Royal Canin. If his dental disease is that significant, and his mouth bacteria is making that bad of a smell, I would recommend having his teeth evaluated by a veterinarian and possibly having a dental. Bacteria in the mouth are not only bad for a dog's teeth, but they also can lead to bacterial translocation to the heart and kidneys, which can lead to substantial health issues long-term. At his age, I would recommend a senior dog food; there are many good options, including Purina Bright Minds, Acana, and multiple others. A good quality senior food (grain free or not) would most likely be a good option, and then having his teeth issues addressed. Good luck!

Any calories at this stage are welcome so boiled chicken and rice, with some vegetables, would be a good option if she is willing to take it. Vitamins/minerals such as the nutritional gel or a tonic would also be recommended whilst she is undergoing investigations for the cause of her poor appetite (kidney, liver or cushings disease would all be possibilities)

I would recommend a wet food like Purina Pro Plan, Nutro or Natural Balance. I would choose a senior formula (small dog if available). If his teeth fell out naturally you may want to have a dental done to ensure that there are no retained roots that could cause him pain or infection! Home prepared diets can be very difficult to balance long term and I strongly recommend a consult with a specialist nutritionist such as through tuft clinical nutrition unit in order to ensure he is receiving all of the trace elements, vitamins, minerals and energy he requires. In food sensitivities, a hydrolyzed diet such as royal canin hypoallergenic can be very effective also. Chicken and rice is a very bland and effective diet in the short to medium term but would need supplemental feeding in the long term

Unfortunately, some dogs are predisposed to bad dental disease genetically. There really is not a great food for prevention of dental disease. A diet that was designed to help with prevention of tartar accumulation is a food called Hills T/D and requires a prescription from your veterinarian. There are other means of preventing tartar from occurring such as Oravet chews, Tartar shield, Plaque off or CET oral enzymatic toothpaste. The most beneficial thing you can do for Ruby is to have her teeth cleaned professionally under anesthesia once yearly. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction!
