Is Cefpet effective for dog skin infections or stomach problems?

That depends. Ideally a culture and sensitivity is run on the urine to identify what bacteria is present and guide what antibiotic should be used. However, this is sometimes cost prohibitive. Cefpodoxime is a perfectly reasonable choice if we don't have a urine culture to go off of, or if we don't yet have those results. If Laddie is eating,is not vomiting or having diarrhea, and isn't in acute kidney failure due to the infection, oral antibiotics alone are probably just fine. However if she is vomiting, is not eating, or is acting very lethargic, she should be re-evaluated by a vet. It is wise to monitor the creatinine value in the blood. If it is elevated, often dogs are treated with IV fluids as well as antibiotics. The creatinine can be measured daily with a blood test. Cephalexin is widely available in India under the brand name Keflex, Acfex and many more. Your local pharmacy shop should carry it or be able to order it. You should ask your pet doctor to call the pharmacist to organise it for you. Poor Simba. I would talk to your vet about trying a different type of antibiotics as these sound like they are causing an upset tummy. Also, be sure to tell your vet about his loose stool and decreased appetite in case he wants to start him on a probiotic or another medicine. You can try the medicated shampoo but it may take longer to heal and it may not completely heal. Talk to your vet about which shampoo he recommends. Also, talk to your vet about adding in an anti-histamine or other allergy medicines a lot of times allergies is what causes these skin infection. I have included an article about Benadryl below. Most accurately though would be to treat the infection based on a culture but it would be acceptable to try to treat with cephalexin if your veterinarian agrees that that is appropriate based on Moti's medical history. Although cephalexin and cefpodoxime are both cephalosporin antibiotics, they are different drugs - so it's certainly possible for an organism to be susceptible to one and not the other. Culture results generally give us a very good idea of what antibiotics are likely to be useful in treating the infection, so I don't see any problem with using cefpodoxime if this is what your veterinarian has recommended.

That is a very interesting observation. I have not had any clients mention that side effect, but most of the scents that we have are regulated by the normal yeast and bacteria on our skin and in our GI tract. If those yeast or bacterial number or types are changed by an antibiotic, it certainly could result in the body having a different scent. So your vet gave you an allergy medication and an antibiotic. Cefpodoxime is used to treat respiratory infections in dogs. I am wondering if a prescription eye medication would be good for Coco's eyes, and I would take her back into the vet to discuss using that. I hope this helps.
