My bulldog puppy has hot spots in his wrinkles. How can I help?

This is commonly seen when they get a skin infection (aka hot-spots). It's a common problem with bulldogs, because their wrinkles tend to trap moisture and foster an environment for infection.

You can try a couple of things at home to help clear the infection:

1) Clip the hair around the area with electric clippers and expose all of the lesions.
2) Wash the area with warm water and a medicated shampoo (can get this at the pet store) once a day. Use a cloth and gently wipe away the scabs. Do not scrub, because it will irritate the skin more. It's OK if all of the scabs do not come off in each washing.
3) Make sure the area is completely dry after washing.
4) Do not put any other creams or antiseptics on the wound.

You should start seeing good results within a week after starting this. It may take a few weeks before it's completely cleared. If two weeks go by and it's not getting any better, then it's best to have a veterinarian exam it. Also, if it appears to get worse, then take him to the vet for treatment.

That spot on Louie could be several things including an injury, skin mites, flea bites, ringworm (which humans can get) or a bacterial infection. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing his diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. You can wash the lesion with soap once a day and rinse well (don't wash his whole body, just the spot). Protect the area from licking or scratching. If it doesn't start looking better within about a week or if it gets worse, have him examined by the veterinarian who may prescribe medications. This problem could be caused by a mix between chin and skin fold dermatitis usually caused by a bacterial infection. French Bulldog puppy has spots & chafed hair on mouth. What is it?

Breeds like French Bulldogs, Boxers and English Bulldogs are prone to skin abnormalities around their muzzles. They can have issues with acne, infected hair follicles, ingrown hairs and sometimes even allergies. Jack has some pretty big lesions so I recommend to have him checked out by his veterinarian as he may need systemic medication to address inflammation and possibly infection. Talk to the doctor about topical treatment that you can provide on a routine basis. Keeping his muzzle clean and dry will also help to prevent this moving forward. My dog has a hotspot. How can I treat and clean it safely at home?

A definite NO on the hydrogen peroxide! 1. It is best to shave the hair around the affected area if at all possible. If you don't have clippers you can use scissors to shorten the hair - just be careful you don't cut him. If you can't shave or trim the hair don't stress too much about it. 2. If he is really itching you can also apply this topical hydrocortisone spray after the wound is dry from the using the pads. Once a day should be enough. That spot on Harvey could be several things including allergies, skin mites, bacterial infection or ringworm (which humans can get). Hopefully this is a good sign that his body is fighting the cause since it appears to be healing. There are a couple things you can do at home and they can help but they may not address the underlying cause. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You can wash the lesion once a day (not his whole body, just the lesions). You can apply a dab of organic coconut oil once a day and rub in well (do not allow him to lick the area afterwards). Also protect the area from trauma by having your pup wear an elizabethan collar at all times. My dog has an oozing sore on his neck. Is it a hot spot? OTC help?

Dudley's lesion looks most suspicious for a hot spot (acute moist dermatitis). You can try carefully clipping the longer hair around the lesion and cleaning it daily with a diluted antiseptic solution (such as chlorhexidine or betadine). Be sure to rinse and dry the area thoroughly! If Dudley seems to be scratching or rubbing at this lesion, keep an e-collar (cone) on him to prevent further skin irritation. If the lesion grows, or is not improving in the next week, Dudley should go to his vet. I hope this helps and that all goes well!
