Is it safe to breed my 3-year-old tripod dog, Juno? What to know?

Mating might be difficult for her as she will have to stand on 3 legs and support the weight of a male on top of her. There will not likely be any changes or hardships during the birthing process, but the extra weight of a pregnancy can be harder on her front leg to support. While 6 is not old for small breed dog it is getting towards the end of healthy breeding though. I would not likely breed her due to these circumstances and have her spayed to prevent any future infections and risk

It is never recommend to breed a female to a larger male due to the increased size of puppies and the subsequent increased risk of dystocia (difficulty giving birth) leading to a c section. I would choose a male who is her weight or small than her to avoid any danger, so pick a breed of male that smaller than she is when she is fully grown. Please know that it is never recommend to breed a dog on her first heat. That's because she will not be fully mature either physically and emotionally, and that leads to an increased risk of dystocia as well as possible poor mothering. You should wait to breed her until at least her second or third heat (around 18 months of age). I hope this helps!

Hi there, Breeding can be quite the undertaking and you're correct to have concerns. Chihuahua's have narrow birth canals and often need c sections to get their puppies out. I'm not sure how much she weighs, but a difficult birth certainly could occur. I would consider whether you want to take the risk of breeding and go from there. It is likely they will be fine. As long as the parents are close in weight (within 10-15 lbs or so, the puppies should be fine. Yes, it is absolutely fine to spay your dog, and I applaud you for wanting to do it! She's humping because it feels good, not because she is necessarily in heat again. I would have it done before she goes into heat :-)

Hi there. Sounds like she may have a hypoplastic vulva. All female dogs can be at risk of having a hypoplastic vulva but medium to giant sized dog breeds have been shown to be at a higher risk. I suggest your friend have his bitch evaluated by a vet before attempting to mate her. Your male could cause serious damage to her. I would call around local clinics to see if you can find a vet familiar with this topic. I see that Bella is three years old, and if you do plan on breeding her, I would not hold off for long. It's never recommended to breed dogs past five years of age. Best of luck.
