How to help my blind, deaf senior dog's anxiety and howling?

You are correct there could be something else going on. In senior dogs like Molly, they can develop a condition called canine cognitive dysfunction. This is similar to dementia in humans, and it would cause her to behavior strangely at times. I would have Molly seen by a vet. The vet can diagnose if she does have cognitive canine dysfunction by doing a physical exam, blood tests, urinalysis, and x-rays to rule out any health problems that could potentially cause her symptoms. If canine cognitive dysfunction is diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment with you. While it cannot be cured, it can be managed with mediations, behavioral therapy, and special diets.

Kellie is so cute! In a 14 year old dog I would recommend an exam and blood work to rule out any medical conditions like kidney disease or diabetes. If normal, she could have some dementia or brain aging. If so there is no test or treatment. I would recommend a new Purina diet called BrightMinds (I'm not sure it's available in the U.K.) which may help slow the brain aging effects. I would also talk to your vet about melatonin supplements. It may not work but if it does it could help settle her. Also, discuss arthritis medications with your vet. Poor Madge! I'm sorry to hear about your loss. Dogs can and do mourn much like people do, so it is likely that she is feeling a bit lost and afraid now that her friend is no longer there. There are a few things you can do to help with separation anxiety, including playing a soothing talk radio or TV show while you're gone, leaving a puzzle toy to distract her, going on a long walk to tire her out prior to your leaving, or having a T-shirt or blanket that smells like you or your passed away pup to cuddle with. Pheromone diffusing collars can also help by releasing a calming pheromone to help reduce stress and anxiety. If you can, coming home for breaks during the day to let her out and play with her may help reduce her anxiety. If the problems persist or do not improve, speaking with a trainer or behaviorist in your area may help. They may be able to formulate a training plan to help Madge feel a bit better and get comfortable in her new situation.

There are medications for this condition (known as cognitive dysfunction) that can be very helpful. It does sound like things are tough for both of you. From what you are saying, it sounds like you prefer a holistic treatment program for Tango, but it sounds like he's gotten worse despite this.
