Which dog breeds make the best loving companions and best friends?

One of my favorite breeds is a Golden Retriever. A very intelligent dog, loyal, easy to train, and tends to get along with other animals. I had one, and she got along great with my other dogs and my cats. A Labrador Retriever would be another good option. I would see about getting one of those breeds. I hope this helps!

I am so sorry to hear about your losses. I would definitely consider a mixed breed dog from a shelter or rescue group. A medium to large sized dog, such as a retriever or pit bull mix might be a good size if you are looking for a dog to be a "protector". You will want to be sure to talk to the rescue group or shelter about what you are looking for in a dog and what your lifestyle is like (active vs. mostly sedentary, living in an apartment vs large fenced yard, other pets in the house) so they can fit you with the right personality for your dog. It's more about the personality of the dog and not the breed. I would recommend finding a rescue or shelter that might let you bring her to visitations or do a trial period with a new puppy or dog at home. You have to decide if you want a puppy, adult, large or small dog. Any dogs with a wire coat or a curly coat will generally shed less than breeds who lack those features. Certainly checking out your local shelter is worthwhile as you may find the perfect companion right there! Otherwise, any poodle crosses will usually have these traits (although some may be more active). Miniature or Standard Schnauzers may be a good fit for you. Beagles and Cavaliers are generally very nice dogs but they do shed. Check out the AKC website as it has a wealth of breeds and information available. Thanks for reaching out. Choosing a smaller of the parrot species if probably the best. Cockatiels, budgieregars are lovebirds can be great companions, are intelligent and fairly easy to care for. Longevity should be considered, as cockatiels can easily live into their 20s, and possibly longer. Hand-reared parrots tend to be more socialized towards humans, but can also lack the some bird-like traits. Do a little research, visit some pet stores. Good luck.

The only breed that does come to mind & having all the characteristics you want, is the Great Pyrennees. You get the size, & temperament you want. But all breeds can grow into the dog you want. It is a matter of love, socialization, training, & lots of patience. If you do go for a puppy, choose one that is relatively calm, will allow you to gently hold down on his back &, is not shy.
