Is it normal for my Basset Hound puppy's ribs to stick out?

Pet's info: Dog | Basset Hound | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 16 days old | 25 lbs

I have a basset hound puppy, who is a month old and is it weird if his ribs stick out towards the back of his body near his tail. He doesn't cry or scream when I touch them. Do I need to take him to the vet? Plus he eats more than he is supposed too and loves to chew on things.

Handsome boy! It’s not uncommon for some puppies to have the last rib flare out. It’s nothing to be overly concerned about. If he’s an active dog I recommend feeding him as much as he wants to eat while growing. The recommended amount on the bag is just a guideline. As he ages and becomes less active and not growing as quickly he should not eat as much. As far as chewing goes he’s a puppy and is probably teething so he will naturally chew on things. Please get him chew toys so he doesn’t chew the furniture. This stage should last a couple of months then most dogs grow out of it. Tony is a good looking pup! Most dogs with this breed will have a large, deep chest and a more narrow waist. You should also be able to see the last rib when they turn. Some dogs do naturally run more thin. If you are seeing more than the last rib, try increasing the food intake or changing to food to a higher calorie diet (you can find information about the calories on the side of the package). My dog's ribs are sticking out, but he's not underweight. What's wrong?

However, it is possible that this means that he needs to gain a bit of weight as usually ribs sticking out is one of the criteria veterinarians use to determine the body conditions score of a patient. Perhaps make sure that Timber is being fed the needed caloric intake based on his specific information which takes into account the breed, activity level, age, among other things. My dog's rib cage looks large or is getting bigger. Should I worry?

Opie looks pretty normal in the pictures. It may be that he's just getting a bit overweight. If he's breathing normally, not panting while resting and calm, has good energy and appetite, then it's probably ok to watch it and just keep an eye on his weight. If he's doing anything funny, or you just have a bad feeling about it, it's worthwhile to have a quick exam to make sure it's normal. Good luck!

No, you should not be able to see every bone. A normal healthy weight dog should not appear boney. You should be able to feel the ribs with your hands, but not see them. I'm not sure the age of this puppy, but reasons for poor weight gain can be improper amount of food, poor quality food or parasite problems.

My dog eats well but I see her ribs. Is she too thin or sick?

If her ribs are really sticking out and there is no fat or muscle, then see your vet. There could be a medical cause for her condition. If your vet clears her, increase the amount of food offered until she is at an appropriate weight. Ask your vet how to perform a Body Condition Score (BCS) on your dog using the 9 point scale. Ideally, she should have a waist when looked at from above. Her ribs should be seen and easily felt under a layer of fat/muscle. From the side, her chest should tuck up into her abdomen.

Why can I see my 10-week Pit Bull puppy's ribs when she eats?

If she has not been recently dewormed I would start there as worms can cause improper weight gain. How much to feed depends on what food you are feeding her. Be sure she is eating a high quality PUPPY food and follow the instructions/recommendations on how much to feed by what the packaging tells you.
