Why is my American Bully mix itching with skin welts and sores?

Hello. Allergies are pretty common in Am. Bulls & of course, much worse in the summer than any other time of the year. You should talk with your veterinarian about the need to start any allergy medications. In the meantime, you should start Bandz on a good fish oil supplement like Nordic Naturals ( available online or at some bigger pet retailers ). You can also use pretty much any OTC fish oil, but Nordic Naturals has a very good reputation. Using a regular 1000-1200 mg fish oil, start Bandz on 1 capsule daily. As he grows, you may need to to increase to twice a day. You can also bathe Bandz regularly ( 1-2 times a week ) using cool water & an oatmeal based shampoo, or one containing either Pramoxine or hydrocortisone. Use a damp paper towel to wipe off his skin every time he comes in from outdoors & to gently wipe out his ears. Never use a Q-tip in the ears. I'm so sorry Winston is having allergy problems. If his symptoms are all skin related I would recommend first getting a referral to a veterinary dermatologist. They can help determine what may be the cause of the skin disease and if allergy testing is necessary. Allergies can be either from environmental causes or food related, if food related a very strict food trial is the best way to determine that. Typically a Futrell is done with a prescription diet of novel protein and novel carbohydrate sources, meaning that there is nothing in the food that Winston has ever eaten before at all. So that typically requires a specific prescription diet of novel protein source or a hydrolyzed diet. While undergoing the field trial a dog cannot eat anything except for that specific food for a period of three months in order to determine if food allergies are the problem. No treats no table scraps nothing they can scavenge outside, etc. so few trials require a good bit of effort and dedication from the owner. Which is why I recommend a dermatology first to make sure a good trial is even necessary. Some bulldogs suffer from Atopy a skin condition that may mimic allergies but no identifiable trigger. Hi there. What you are describing is suspicious of allergies. While I always recommend that my clients get a skin scrape first to make sure there are no mites, etc, if this is negative we begin the journey to diagnosing the possible allergens. Many dogs have flea allergies. If your pet is up to date on a good flea preventative, this is not as likely. Commonly, dogs can develop food allergies over time as well. The worst part of checking for this is that a true food trial (a new specialized diet) has to be the ONLY thing you feed and can take a few months to see real resorts. Allergy medications are available now through your veterinarian's office. Depending on what they see on physical exam, your pet might be. Candidate for Apoquel or chtopoint injections to control itching. I hope this information helps!

It really comes down to figuring out what is causing her allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!
