How to get my dog tested for allergies without breaking the bank?

For food allergies, the best test is a food trial in which your dog doesn't eat any of a particular food for 3 months, and then if the allergy symptoms go away, you feed the old food again, and if the symptoms come back with the old food, it means she was indeed allergic to the food you were testing. As far as environmental allergies, there isn't a clear conscience on what the best test is. It can either be a blood test or a skin test. I think most dermatologist still recommend the skin test as best, but it does require going to a dermatologist and having her off steroids for some number of days (the amount depends on the particular dermatologist). I would also recommend checking with a dermatologist to make sure it's ok for her to be on steroids when you do the blood testing if you go that way. The results of either type of test for environmental allergies are used to make shots to help the body learn to react less to the allergens. This takes several months to a year. I am so sorry to hear that Rio is having allergy issues. By allergy testing I assume you mean bloodwork? The price for this can vary significant depending on what tests are bing run and what company is used. The blood tests are also really only useful for environmental allergens such as grasses, pollens, mold etc. food allergies do not show up reliably on blood tests. There are certainly a number of inexpensive tests hour vet can perform on your dog though, to help determine if there are any complicating factors such as a skin or ear infection, or perhaps mange. A skin scraping, skin cytology and ear swabs/cytology are all things your vet may recommend. If your vet feels that Rio's issues are related to a food allergy they will discuss options with you and may recommend trying any number of prescription or other the counter foods. The important thing to remember when dealing with any allergy (and food allergies especially) is that response to treatment is not going to be immedieate, and the problem may not ever be fully resolved. A food trial can take 4-6 weeks before results are seen, and you may need to try a number of different types of food before finding one that is compatible with Rio's issues. Hello! Canine allergies can be a really difficult problem to manage, so I sympathize! There are two main classes of allergies- environmental and food. If allergy testing hasn't been done, it is an expensive investment, but it can give you a report of the most common environmental allergies. Most environments that are colder and snowier tend to have less pollens, allergens, and insects overall and many allergic dogs may cope better in colder climates for that reason. Dogs with environmental allergies benefit from regular baths and having their feet wiped down with hypoallergenic baby wipes after they go outdoors to mechanically remove any possible pollens, etc that may be stuck to the feet and triggering a reaction. Dogs that are primarily allergic to ingredients of their food may do much better on a different diet. Dogs tend to be allergic to proteins in their diet, such as beef or chicken. Grain allergies are possible but exceedingly rare- grain free diets are widely considered a marketing ploy by vets and not actually helpful. My own dog has a beef allergy and does just fine on over the counter food with no beef products, for example. It takes 8-12 weeks after exposure to the food allergen for the reaction to completely go away- for this reason, many people get frustrated with new diets too early and give up. The diet also will not work if she is being fed any outside table scraps or treats, so compliance is key. Trying a diet with a new protein she has not had before, such as fish or kangaroo, for an entire 12 weeks may be a beneficial idea to discuss with your dermatologist. If you do this, transition the food slowly over 7 days to let her GI flora adjust and make sure if you have a dog food bin, you clean it well between the two foods as to not contaminate the new food. The most important thing to remember with allergies is that she is likely constantly being exposed to them, so treatment needs to be just as constant to battle it. I hope this is helpful! I'm so sorry Winston is having allergy problems. If his symptoms are all skin related I would recommend first getting a referral to a veterinary dermatologist. They can help determine what may be the cause of the skin disease and if allergy testing is necessary. Allergies can be either from environmental causes or food related, if food related a very strict food trial is the best way to determine that. Typically a Futrell is done with a prescription diet of novel protein and novel carbohydrate sources, meaning that there is nothing in the food that Winston has ever eaten before at all. So that typically requires a specific prescription diet of novel protein source or a hydrolyzed diet. While undergoing the field trial a dog cannot eat anything except for that specific food for a period of three months in order to determine if food allergies are the problem. No treats no table scraps nothing they can scavenge outside, etc. so few trials require a good bit of effort and dedication from the owner. Which is why I recommend a dermatology first to make sure a good trial is even necessary. Some bulldogs suffer from Atopy a skin condition that may mimic allergies but no identifiable trigger. Atopic dermatitis is an inflammatory, chronic skin disease associated with allergies. These allergic reactions can be brought on by normally harmless substances like grass, mold spores, house dust mites, and other environmental allergens. A food allergy is not likely the cause. There are two types of testing available in the United States. I do not know what you have available for testing in India but I will go over the types we have. Serologic allergy testing is basically a blood test but it does not always have reliable results. The quality of this kind of testing often depends on the laboratory which analyzes the results. Intradermal testing, whereby small amounts of test allergens are injected in the skin and wheal (a red bump) response is measured, may also used to identify the cause of your pet's allergic reaction and is considered the gold standard for testing. So, if available I suggest you get the intradermal testing done. The treatment will depend on what is causing your pet’s allergic reaction. If the reaction is due to atopy, for example, hyposensitization therapy can be performed. Your veterinarian will give your pet injections of the allergens to which it is sensitive. This decreases itchiness in 60 to 80 percent of dogs, but may approximately take six months to a year to see an improvement. Medicines such as corticosteroids and antihistamines can also be given to control or reduce itching. Cyclosporine is effective in controlling itching associated with long-term skin allergies, while sprays can be used over large body surfaces to control itching with minimal side effects. If you want to feed a raw diet that is up to you but it is not likely to help with atopic dermatitis. I don't recommend a raw diet due to the potential for the dogs to contract diseases like E. coli and salmonella. It is better to cook the diet if you want to do a homemade diet. Hope this helps.

Proceeding with allergy testing would be a good idea though please consider other possible allergies other than environmental allergies which allergies testing would help with. This may be covered by your insurance though that is highly dependent on which one you have. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!
