My 1-year-old male GSD: Is he old enough to breed a female dog?

Bruno won't be fully mature physically and emotionally until he is at least 18 months to two years of age. That's because large breed dogs mature slower than the smaller breeds of dogs. But that doesn't mean you can't get a puppy now, and I would recommend having Bruno neutered before getting another dog. Unneutered dogs can and do become very territorial and aggressive when intact dogs enter their home, and that can cause a lot of problems for you to deal with daily. In addition, if you get a female, this can lead to unwanted puppies when she goes into heat. GSDs are a very active breed, and if you have the time and energy to give both dogs all the exercise, attention, and training they need, there is no reason why you can't get another GSD.

I am not sure of your question but if you want to know if a 10 month old dog is old enough to sire puppies then yes, he is old enough. Most dogs become sexually mature between 8 and 10 months of age. It is always best to wait to breed a dog until his is skeletally mature as well which would be at about 18-24 months of age.

Large dogs such as Tasha often do not come into heat until 10-15 months old so I'm not concerned yet. I like to have them be at least two years old and have their hips checked with an X-ray for hip dysplasia before breeding. German Shepard Dogs can have bad hips that can be passed on to the puppies so I always want to make sure both parents have good hips before breeding. Generally I recommend the female dog only have one to two litters as having puppies and raising them is a lot of work for her, and you too! It may be that your male is still very young and doesn't know what to do yet. Keeping them together during your female's heat may help get him interested in trying to figure it out. However if he still doesn't show any interest, having both him and your female examined by a vet or theriogenologist (reproductive specialist) to make sure everything is OK is best.

Males can mate after 6 months of age. Females can be bred, ideally, after 2 years of age. Separating them during this upcoming heat cycle would be recommended if you are not prepared to breed dogs and have a litter of puppies. By her next cycle, both will be more than ready to breed and in the interim, you can gain knowledge regarding breeding and raising dogs.

Henry is still too young to mate. It’s recommended to wait until a male is at least 2 years years old to breed. Also, if there is a problem with pet over population, it is not recommended to add to the problem by breeding dogs who are not purebred and registered. If there are not enough homes for dogs, then adding more dogs is not the solution. Males will be fine not breeding ever. It will not affect their health but it is recommended to neuter dogs. Neutering dogs has many health benefits and decreases behavioral problems such as aggression and dominance issues. Henry is old enough to be neutered. Your female is too young and you should not breed her yet. Dogs should not be bred until they are 2 years old because they are physically and mentally immature. Additionally, Yorkies have a few health concerns so both parents need to be screen before breeding. Any dog that is bred should be with the intention to contribute the best genetics to the breed.
