How to know when it's time to humanely put my suffering cat to sleep?

Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon | Male | neutered | 17 years and 7 months old

I have a Maine Coon cat that is almost 18 years old. In the past year he has started to display some symptoms that cause me concern. He vomits 5-6 times a day. Sometimes right after eating sometimes just bile. He cries a lot. He sometimes stands in one spot and just appears to be dazed. Sometimes though he seems fine. I dont want to do anything rash and honestly can not afford diagnostics but want to do the right thing for him. How do you know when it is time to put a pet to sleep?

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Jake. Your question is one that is frequently asked. I try to counsel clients that once a pet stops eating, drinking, and just basically lays around, it's time to start thinking about one of several courses of action. These would be a diagnostic workup or start considering euthanasia. You said that you don't want to do a workup so I guess you should start considering euthanasia. It is possible that Jake has something that is very treatable like hyperthyroidism, but of course, that would involve a diagnostic workup. There are many things that it could be and some of them are treatable, and of course, some are not. Liver disease, kidney disease, diabetes, or even cancer are just some of the possible causes. The problem with vomiting is that unless you intervene, he will just continue to get weaker and weaker from fluid/electrolyte losses. This will lead to extreme lethargy, shock, and even death. I learned over the years that this experience is different for everyone. Some people can not under any circumstances, make the irreversible call of ending their pets life. I counsel clients but never push them unless I truly think that the pet is suffering. I would just say go with your heart and remember, sometimes euthanasia is the last gift of love that pet owners can give their beloved companions. Please know that whatever you decide, it is the right decision. Again, I'm sorry that you are going through this with Jake.

    Hi there! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear that Moti is not feeling well. Vomiting, weakness, increased water intake and decreased urine production can be observed with kidney disease and failure, among many other conditions. This would be common in an older kitty. I think it would be good to have Moti evaluated by your veterinarian for further diagnostics and treatment. If you are unable or prefer not to proceed with further treatments for her and she is not feeling well, humane euthanasia would be fair to consider. I am really sorry and hope that he feels better! I am sorry to hear about Ernie's conditions. It certainly sounds like he has been through an awful lot and isn't feeling to well. Obviously without seeing Ernie in front of me, I can't give you my fully official opinion. However, if you feel that Ernie is no longer able to do the things he enjoys, can't eat a meal without being in pain, and is spending more time sleeping and hiding, it may be time to start seriously considering his quality of life. I know that this is a very personal and difficult decision, but sometimes it is the kindest and most humane decision you can make for your pet. All of the conditions you have named are incurable and are likely to progress. When in concert with one another, they may progress even faster. No one can make this decision for you, but I think you should do whatever you feel is right in your heart.

I'm sorry that you and Bugger have been through so much together during his skin cancer management. Deciding when to euthanize a beloved pet is never easy and there often isn't a clear cut, black and white answer. Instead, we're left with a lot of maybes, what ifs, and gray areas. I think it's important to consider Bugger's overall quality of life. Namely, can he still do most of the things that he always used to enjoy? That may have meant chasing a bell ball or laser pointer, jumping onto a sunny perch, or following you around the house. If he's struggling to do many of his favorite things, that's a good indication that his quality of life isn't what it used to be. Eating and drinking are all well and good, but that doesn't always tell the whole picture. Based on your description, I simply don't have enough information in order to guide you one way or the other. Instead, I think it's important for you to try to take a step back and objectively assess Bugger. OSU has a quality of life guide that I think is really helpful in making these objective and less emotional assessments. Ultimately, when we make the decision to euthanize a pet, we do it as a kindness to them to ease their suffering, even though it can be gut-wrenching for us. What are the signs my sick cat is suffering and needs euthanasia?
First off. I'm so sorry Choocherboo is sick! I work for a home euthanasia service, so I face this question all the time with my clients. I recommend looking at the cat's quality of life. Are they eating, drinking, doing things they normally enjoy like playing? Or are they having difficulty breathing, spend most days sleeping, don't eat, vomiting, are losing lots of weight, and/or appear very ill? When the cat's quality of life has declined, that's when euthanasia should be considered. Unfortunately I can't tell you what to do, but I do suggest evaluating his quality of life, and if it's declined, then euthanasia would be the kindest option. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

Hello. Honestly, waiting for Chloe to pass naturally can be a rough, painful & a distressing way to go. You just said you do not want her to suffer I would definitely have your veterinarian evaluate her to see if there is anything reasonable that can be done to help her. Perhaps she is a little dehydrated & just needs some subcutaneous fluids. If not, she should be allowed to go peacefully surrounded by the people that she loves. She will be sedated so that when her final moments come, there is no stress with her or you. This is the most humane way to allow Chloe to move on with dignity. There might be some things available to ease her discomfort for a while longer, but only you & your veterinarian can decide if this is the right time to let her go. It is such a hard decision to make! I work for a home euthanasia service, so I face this question with my clients all the time. I recommend looking at Pete's quality of life in order to make this decision. When a cat stops eating, is very lethargic, has trouble breathing, or just wants to sleep all the time, that is a sign their quality of life has decreased to a point where letting them go should be considered. I'm so sorry G is so sick. I work for an home euthanasia service, so I face these kinds of questions frequently with my clients. I would look at G's quality of life in make the decision as to when to euthanize him. If he's in pain, losing weight, having diarrhea, detached, and head pressing, his quality of life isn't very good. When a cat is in constant pain, they will be suffering daily, and in my opinion, that is when it is time to let them go peacefully. It's never easy to say goodbye to a beloved pet, and they are often ready to go before we are ready to let them go. How do I know if my pet is suffering and it's time for euthanasia?
Thank you for submitting your question regarding your pet. I recommend euthanasia based on several factors. If there is an incurable or painful disease present, I do not want the pet to suffer. I want the pet to be willing to eat and drink on its own. I want the pet to have the mobility to make it to the litterbox or outside to be able to go to the bathroom. I want the animal to still experience joy in its life. This could be short walks, playing with toys or just happy to be with you. If these criteria are not being met, I will discuss euthanasia with the family. If you are still unsure, you can schedule a quality of life consultation with your veterinarian.
