Why does my unneutered male cat hump his toy when he gets stressed?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | unneutered | 3 years and 3 months old | 6.8 lbs

Hi, I have a rather embarrassing question about my 3 yrs. old unnuetered male cat. He has a a toy that he occasionally humps. He is a very loving and happy cat otherwise, but he is very skittish and tends to get stressed out easily. Anytime my parents or siblings enter my room he starts to hump his toy. Is he doing this out of stress? I'm very worried. Once again sorry for the embarrassing question.

Hello. Not embarrassing, especially to a veterinarian. Yes, stress could be a trigger. You might want to try a calming pheromone in your room called Feliway, & if Kiski is not to be used for breeding, do consider having him neutered. This will not change his loving, happy disposition, but may help if this is partially caused by his sexual needs. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
