Why does my unneutered male cat hump his toy when he gets stressed?

Hello, & yes, this may be normal behavior for a young neutered cat. In most cases it is an appeasing behavior, or attention seeking. If when Duncan does this & it helps him settle, & he is doing no damage to himself, toys or the environment, then let him be. He may need more enrichment & toys to occupy him, using food toys are a good idea. Most cats quit within a few minutes. Do not punish him or take toys away as this may make the behavior worse. Neutering may help this behavior. It can also decrease other male cat behavior such as urine spraying or marking. And if Simba is an indoor cat, urine of a neutered male cat does not smell nearly as strong as an intact male. In general neutered male cats tend to live longer healthier lives bc of less disease and injuries fighting.

Hi there. I personally, would not be overly concerned with this behavior unless he is being aggressive towards you, other people or other animals. Without actually seeing the behavior myself it it really difficult to say too much though. Male cats that are neutered after they reach sexual maturity are more likely to continue to exhibit behaviors that were caused by testosterone even after they are neutered. These behaviors can include urine marking and humping types of behaviors. That is one of the reasons that we recommend neutering before sexual maturity. If the shelter neutered him before you adopted him, then I would not doubt that he is neutered, but you certainly can have your veterinarian examine him just to be on the safe side. Yes, you are correct that this behavior is likely related to the stress of having guests in the house. There are a few things you can do to get Myloe to stop this behavior. You can get Feliway, which is a pheromone diffuser that helps cats with anxiety. There are calming collars you can have him wear that will also help with anxiety via pheromones. Finally, you can take Myloe into the vet. The vet may prescribe him anti-anxiety medication you can give him before guests come over to calm him down and prevent the spraying.

Some cats are just very loving and social. If he's now neutered he's likely not feeling the "urge" to be a father, but it could be that he just still likes cuddling and snuggling stuffed animals or even pets. If he really likes kittens or baby animals, looking into becoming a foster family for litters of kittens at your local shelter may help with his urge to nurture while helping give care to a litter until they can find a forever home. As long as he isn't being destructive or doesn't seem stressed out by it, I wouldn't be too worried. But if he seems stressed, painful or has any signs of illness, a vet checkup to rule out any issues is always a good idea.
