My 16-year-old cat's twitching is getting worse. What's wrong?

The twitching and the pain is the most concerning. Causes in an older cat: metabolic issues (liver, kidney failure, diabetes), cancer, pancreatitis, foreign body, or it could just be a virus. I've seen cats twitch when their blood pressure and blood sugar is low. It also could be from different electrolyte abnormalities. Good luck!

Poor Princess! It's important to determine why this is happening in order to be able to treat it effectively. Muscle atrophy in the rear legs can occur due to arthritis, neurologic disease, an injury of some kind, or a metabolic disorder such as diabetes or hyperthyroidism. I would recommend taking Princess to the vet for an exam - he/she can do x-rays, blood work, or other testing if needed to help determine what is causing the muscle loss. Many of these issues are treatable once a diagnosis is made.

Some cats can twitch their backs if their fur is overly sensitive to sensation. Most cats twitch their backs due to fleas so I recommend to treat her for fleas and use a good product such as Cheristan or Revolution. If the twitching stops, then you know it was fleas. Worms don't generally cause back twitching but they can cause GI upset if the numbers are high enough. Also, if she is not spayed yet, you need to get that done ASAP as cats will start cycling as early as 6 months old. I hope this is helpful and please post any additional questions.

I would be most concerned either a neurologic issue, such as a slipped disc pushing on her spine, or a blood clot lodged in the blood supply for her rear end (called Feline Saddle Thrombosis). I would recommend taking her to a vet ASAP to further evaluation.

It can be very difficult to recognise pain in animsls because they are so stoic. I would recommend taking Ellie to your vet and they can do a thorough exam and check the joints for signs of inflammation and pain. It may be suggested to do a trial with a painkiller to see if it helps her. A high percentage of older cat have arthritis.

The spasms could be seizures. Have her physically examined by your veterinarian or a veterinary neurologist to diagnose the underlying cause. In the meantime, the vet may dispense medication to control or prevent the spasms/seizures. Keep her as stress free as possible, since stress may be a trigger for the condition.

I would recommend that you get Sophie in to see your veterinarian. A thorough physical exam will help you and your vet determine if there is pain anywhere (arthritis, etc) that may be causing her to slow down. It would also be indicated to run some blood tests on her to see if there are any other medical issues going on that may be causing her symptoms. Pain can sometimes cause twitching or small muscle spasms --especially if they are having back or neck pain. If that's the case your vet may be able to recommend therapeutic laser treatments and/or acupuncture. These methods of treatment along with medications can make a huge difference.
