My senior cat has seizures, blindness, weakness. Is it a brain tumor?

I'm sorry about Jenna. It sounds like she may really not be doing well. Brain tumors can cause seizure like activity and other issues so this may be what your are seeing. If she is so extremely lethargic that she's non responsive and just laying around I am concerned that she may get dehydrated or malnourished. There is a possibility that she is in pain. I think it's best to seek veterinary care for Jenna as so as possible to determine if she needs pain medications or other hospice care.

Initially it will be important to make sure they were seizures and not heart related (syncope/arrhythmia) as these can appear similar. Try to catch an event on video for your neurologist and document what happens before, during, and after the event. You are right the most common sign of a brain tumor is new onset seizures. But we do also always rule out any other causes like systemic issues, heart issues, and any other cancer elsewhere in the body. There are also other problems that can occur in the brain like inflammation. Ultimately what your neurologist will recommend will be based on the exam and information you provide but is likely to include chest xrays, an abdominal ultrasound, and MRI +/- CSF tap. With seizures starting at that age an a change in behavior ibwiukd bravery concerned there is a disease affecting the brain that is causing the problems. If that is the case you are unlikely to notice any improvement and likely see things get worse and the seizures progress. There is medication you can try to stop the seizures.

Hi, I am sorry to hear that Lola is going through all this at the moment. I think your vet is right in suspecting a brain tumour affecting her cerebellum (part of the brain). I think I would consider euthanasia as it must be distressing for her to go through these episodes of circling and falling down. We can’t say if for example she is suffering with headaches as well, we wouldn’t be able to tell but surely to circle continuosly must be distressing. Hope this helps.

Poor Lizzy. I'm concerned she had a seizure, and in a senior cat that could be caused by something really serious like a brain tumor. If she did have a brain tumor, that would affect her hearing and vision. Having a seizure is really disorientating to a cat, and it will take her time to return to normal. I would take her into a vet now to get checked out. Best of luck.

It sounds like she may be having seizure activity. Your vet could run a comprehensive blood panel to rule out metabolic and endocrine diseases. If the bloodwork is normal then it is likely an issue with her brain.

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of Crystal. 18 years old is a great age for any cat, so you must have been doing something right for her to be with you for that long! Without a complete necropsy, you probably won't ever know exactly what happened, but it certainly is possible that she had a brain tumor or stroke. The symptoms you described (weight loss, nausea, fixated on food, crazy for attention, dizziness, then sudden death) makes me think of hyperthyroidism. Overproduction of the thyroid hormone is common in older cats (especially Persians), and is characterized by all of the symptoms your mentioned. Untreated, hyperthyroidism eventually affects the heart, so sudden death from a heart attack or stroke could have occurred. There is also the possibility that she had cancer, or that she simply died of heart failure related to old age. Regardless of the cause, she lived a long, long life with you, and I know she was loved. My deepest condolences for your loss, and I hope that time eases your sorrow.
