my cat is not eating, he smells the food and you can tell he is hungry but gags when he smells food. he also hunts outside and usually eats the cat food. Recently he hasn't been eating and is low on energy. Has been sleeping a lot more. Recently his condition seems to have worsened when he is resting he just sits on his paws and it looks like he is uncomfortable. He is at least ten years old.

The signs you have described could be caused by stress of you trying to syringe him water or heart or lung disease. If this continues for longer than 30-60 minutes, I would recommend that Lucky go to an emergency veterinarian. My opinion on whether it is is time or not would need to be based on his complete medical record. It is not a decision that either you or your veterinarian should take lightly or without all of the necessary medical information. I am so sorry to hear that Lucky isn't doing well.
