Why is my senior cat drinking and peeing a lot? Could it be Cushing's?

It is fairly rare, but ask your veterinarian if your kitty may be suffering from Cushing's disease or liver disease. Also sometimes cats can still be hyperthyroid, even though the thyroid parameters are within normal limits (this is called euthyroid sick). He could also have a tumor. In any case, this needs to be investigated further.

This very commonly causes increased thirst and urination, sticky urine (from the sugar in the urine) and weight loss. Other common causes of weight loss and increased thirst and urination in cats are kidney disease and thyroid disease. I have seen many cats that have more than one of these diseases at the same time. I would strongly recommend taking Flynn to a veterinarian for blood work and urinalysis. This will be the first step in diagnosing his actual condition so that you know how to treat him. I would recommend having a comprehensive blood panel run on pepper to rule these conditions out. I would also have his urine tested as part of a full workup. My concern with Menie is that he can have one of a few different things going on. As cats age they can become diabetic, have chronic kidney disease or even become hyperthyroid. With all these diseases you will see an increase in drinking and weight loss. I would recommend taking Menie to the veterinarian and having blood work and a urinalysis performed to see exactly what is going on with him. The urine will also show if there is a urinary tract infection, which they can have if they have diabetics, kidney disease or even if they don't have another disease going on. Given Beyonce's age, I would be concerned there is a medical cause behind this behavior. Increased drinking and urination can be caused by diseases such as diabetes, hyperthyroidism, or kidney disease, all of which are common in senior cats. Hyperthyroidism can also causes changes in a cat's coat. I would take her into the vet in the next day or two for a physical exam, geriatric blood panel, and urinalysis, which are tests which will help diagnose if she has one of the diseases I mentioned above. Hello, sorry to hear about Mau Mau. Its rare for cats to get cushings, however, a thinning hair coat could be a signs of this disease or many others. One disease that cats do get is hyperthyroidism. Now they typically lose weight and not hair, although hair loss could be a subtle sign. More often, cats can have seasonal shedding and hair thinning which can be attributed to things such as allergies. Given that he has never had allergies in the past does not mean he cannot develop allergies now. It would be best to have Mau Mau tested for metabolic diseases such as hyperthyroidism or cushings, as these can be managed with medications. If these are normal, then Mau Mau may indeed have allergies or a primary hair disease such as balding. Have your veterinarian assess Mau Mau at his next available appointment. Things you may see with either cushings or hyperthyroidism include excessive drinking, urinating, voracious appetite, and weight loss. Hope this helps and best of luck.
