Senior cat with fluid, suspected cancer. How much time does he have?

Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon | Male | 15 years and 8 months old | 12 lbs

My 15 year old cat had fluid buildup in his abdomen but no other symptoms. Ultrasound showed mottling of pancreas and some small nodules. All other tests normal so vet suspects cancer. He is in otherwise great health and has no other symptoms and fluid was drained and he is comfortable. Recommended to monitor and perhaps steroids can slow down the progress. And if fluid builds up again can be drained. As he is not having any discomfort or symptoms could he have a good amount of time ahead?

You have asked a tough question here- this is hard to answer as there are a lot of unknowns at this point.

From what you have told me, it appears there is some tumor or cancer that is causing fluid to build up in his abdomen. This can be very painful but it seems like the pain is being controlled somewhat with draining of the fluid. Steroids can help the pain as well as slow down progression of certain cancers.

If all else appears to be okay (eating and drinking okay, no vomiting or diarrhea), then Leo may continue this way for some time. In this case, I think it is best to take it day by day and focus on cherishing each day you have with him.

Sometimes animals that do have cancer (depending on what cancer they have) can do very well for a while but then turn on a dime so it is important to cherish the present instead of focusing too much on the future in this case.

Why is my senior cat's belly swollen with fluid and legs puffy?

I'm so sorry to hear that you and Sam are going through this scary situation. With normal blood work and the normal ultrasound, I would be concerned about the disease called FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis) which is an uncommon response to a common virus in which the abdomen fills up with fluid and cats don't tend to recover from it. I would also continue to be concerned about cancer even though you're not seeing any signs in the fluid or on the ultrasound. A tumor has to be at least a centimeter in diameter before it can be seen an ultrasound, so it's not unusual for something to just be too small. Unfortunately, without a diagnosis, it's incredibly difficult to treat. And even with a diagnosis, at his age, it's mostly bad things that it could be. At this point, your vet is probably focusing on palliative care to keep Sam comfortable by removing the fluid, keeping him well hydrated, making sure he is comfortable. I would recommend talking to them about his prognosis and your goals for him.

Should I euthanize my 8-year-old cat diagnosed with lymphoma?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am sorry to hear that. Lymphoma is an aggressive disease in cats, especially when in the gastrointestinal system and in circulation. Usually even with chemotherapy you are looking at a prognosis of 2-6 months depending on the exact type of lymphoma. You could try prednisolone as a palliative treatment to make her feel better for the time being and perhaps extend her survival time for a few weeks. If she is already anemic, she may also require a blood transfusion making things a bit more complicated. If she is not doing well and you are not interested in pursuing therapy knowing the prognosis then euthanasia is a good option. Let me know if you have further questions regarding her disease. Why is my cat's belly bloated with fluid and he's losing weight?

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! From the X-rays, I can see that Mara's abdomen appears to be filled with fluid. It is obscuring his liver and intestines from being seen and there may even be a small amount in his lungs. Unfortunately it is impossible to tell what the fluid is from the x-ray alone. His blood work shows some abnormalities with his electrolytes, which may be if he is not eating or from fluid in the abdomen. Mara also has a high white blood cell count, these are the cells that are responsible for fighting off infections and increase if there is one present. Your vet can run some additional diagnostics, and perform a tap and remove the fluid as well as a blood test to determine if Mara is infected with FIP, a mutated form of a common virus that cats are exposed to. My cat has feline leukemia and stomach fluid. Can it be drained?

Hi and thank you for your post. It is hard to say while exactly fluids are building up without examining her fist and getting a history and looking at blood work first. Whether or not removing the fluid will help all depends on why the fluid is accumulating in the first place. Liver disease, cancer, bleeding and other reasons can cause fluid build up. My cat has lymphoma but is living longer. Is it IBD or cancer?

I'm sorry Peppe has lymphoma! Please keep in mind that because I can't see him in person, I can't say anything for certain, but I can give my best opinion on his situations. It's great that he is doing well after two years, and since he did have chemo, it sounds like it was successful! It is still possible that he did have lymphoma and not IBD, and the treatment that was given helped with the cancer. I would continue to give him the prednisone as prescribed by your vet, and enjoy every ounce of time you have with him. Some cats do live longer than expected when they have cancer, not every case is textbook, and you are very lucky to still have Peppe with you. Give him lots of love each day, he is lucky to have such a caring owner as well who is willing to do so much to help him stay heathy :-)

My FIP cat is vomiting brown liquid. Is this a sign of suffering?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Unfortunately, FIP is a largely incurable disease that is very very severe. If he is vomiting, not eating, and unwell, then he likely is feeling very sick and euthanasia might be the best option for him. It is hard to get an official diagnosis of FIP as it can only really be confirmed post-mortem, however you can always have a consultation with a specialist to make sure there isn't anything else going on that can be fixed, but it sounds like your vet has already done a lot of this testing. The testing rules out other things that can be treated. I suggest talking with your vet about any other possible causes that might be curable, and if you want you can ask for a referral to a specialist, however if this ultimately is FIP then euthanasia should be considered. I am so sorry about your little Leo.
