My senior cat ate a bird. He's gagging and hoarse. Should I call vet?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 11 lbs

My cat Oscar is 13. He caught a bird a few days ago and ran off with it! last night and this morning he is swallowing and licking his lips more, gagging randomly, and his voice is horse! He is eating and drinking though. Do you think he ate some of the bird, and it has caused it? He's tired but is still going out and is active enough for his age. I'm just wondering whether to see how he is over the weekend, or to have him seen by his Vet tomorrow? Thank you.

I would recommend taking him in tomorrow just for a checkup since it sounds like that is a possibility. They may take an x-ray to make sure nothing looks abnormal. he could just be nauseous from eating something weird (the bird), but anytime there's gagging I think a checkup is warranted

Poor Ekko! These signs can be caused by an obstruction (especially if he ingested bones and feathers) or a toxicity (perhaps something that the bird had eaten or made the bird sick). Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I suspect Seuss has a scratch or wound to the throat from eating and vomiting the bones. That will often stop cats from meowing and purring. If his is fine in himself, you should just monitor him for a few days at home. He should be back to normal after the weekend, but if you notice signs of gagging, retching or lack of appetite, you should get him checked by your local vets.

My cat swallowed a bird. Why is he lethargic and off his food?

If Rorschach is still feeling bad in the morning I would get him checked by his vet. Depending on the size of the bird and if he swallowed or whole he may have an obstruction of his GI tract or possiblility of bones causing a perforation. if he strains to defecate, begins vomiting definitely get him seen.

Why is my senior cat coughing and gagging after coming inside?

It could be Brownie ate something outside causing him to cough and gag, and it's concerning that he can't eat without doing this behavior. Keep a close eye on him and if this keeps happening over the next few hours, I'd have him seen by a vet for it. The vet can diagnose what is causing it and can treat him.

Sometimes a raspy voice in a cat could be due to a respiratory infection. It’s sounds like Barney is getting better, so I would hold off on a vet for now. If the raspiness gets worse or he develops other signs such as lethargy, anorexia, coughing, or sneezing, then I would take him into the vet. I hope this helps!

My cat is gagging and can't throw up. Is something stuck in his throat?

If you are concerned there may be something stuck, I would recommend that you have Cheeky evaluated by a vet immediately. Sometimes they can eat a piece of string or fabric that gets caught around the base of the tongue. Other times, these types of symptoms can be caused by coughing/respiratory disease or nausea. A thorough exam with a vet should be able to clue you in to what could be going on with Cheeky.
