How to safely travel with my cat to college and help him adjust?

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! I would ask your Veterinarian for an oral sedative for you to give 2 hours before travel. I would use the Feliway spray in his carriage. Once you arrive at your new home, he should be kept in a room by himself away from the other animals for a week then use a baby gate at the door for the him to see and greet the other cat and dog. Do that for a week, then remove the gate. be sure he has access to this room to run away if he needs to. This room can be your bedroom. Use the Feliway diffuser in this room. Stress can affect a senior cat's health, but it is possible to take Rainbow with you to college. A one hour flight will be much easier for her than a 12 hour car ride, and I'd recommend taking her that way. You can talk to your vet to see if they feel she may need any medications for the trip, but I personally flew my cats from the US to New Zealand when I moved here without medication and that was a 12 hour flight from Los Angeles to Auckland. Cats do handle flights well, and one hour is a short flight. I think that having her there with you will help with your transition to college, and she will like being with her owner. I would consider taking her with you.

I would recommend that you schedule an appointment to with your vet to discuss prescription anti-anxiety and anti-nausea medications that can help with stress of traveling for North. 6 hours isn't that long, but it can feel like an eternity if you have motion sickness or intense fear. I usually prescribe enough for a trial run to make sure there are not any odd side effects before the day of travel.

Cats are rarely impressed by travelling and it can cause much anxiety. Calming supplements or royal canin calm food can be very helpful, as can pheromone products. Familiar food, toys and bedding are helpful also

You may be surprised at how well he will take the move. If he becomes car sick, you may want to discuss anti-nausea medications with your vet that will ease this stress. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would set all her belongings in to the room you are staying in. Give her a day to adjust to that room. Then open the door and allow her to come out of the room if she wants. If she is a shy cat she may never leave the room if you are only there for a few days. I would hope that after 1-2 days she will venture out. By keeping all her things in one room she will know that is her safe place to run back to if scared. Cats are hard and it depends on her overall personality.I would just be patient and don't force her to do more than she wants. I wish you the best of luck!
