Is Royal Canin Mobility cat food safe for long-term kidney health?

Great question! One of the benefits of Royal Canin aging 12+ is that helps support renal health by having reduced phosphorus. It doesn't say if it's lower in sodium, but it is an excellent food for older cats and has the reduced phosphorus which is important given the prevalence of kidney disease in older cats. Yes, it is ok to eat renal food, but only as a treat or supplement to the main diet of Hills Rx Senior. Renal food is lower in protein than normal cat food since the kidneys can't handle excess protein when they are failing. So it would be best for long-term health if Tony gets plenty of protein, which is in the senior diet!

I am not familiar with any foods that cause kidney disease - if that was true it wouldn't be sold any more! Cats in general are prone to developing kidney disease as they get older. When that happens, we often change them to a different diet that is lower in protein and has some difference in minerals to decrease the load on the kidneys.

There is a lot of misconception when it comes to pet food. Grains are not bad for pets as long as they are the right kind, high-quality and easy to digest. They provide many essential amino acids that are not found in animal products. Royal Canin and Science Diet are both high quality brands with lots of research, data and good quality control. Switching to the recommended diet is the best thing you can do for Mercy. The diet contains controlled protein, controlled phosphorus, controlled potassium and additional omega three fatty acid supplements as well as antioxidants. You can certainly supplement her as it is not likely to hurt but the main control for kidney disease will be found with the protein and phosphorus. It is safe unless Mel is allergic to it (quite rare). The efficacy of it is a source of discussion and honestly I have never seen great benefits from its administration. The food you are giving is perfect and is part of the treatment for chronic renal failure in cats. K/D prescription diet (Hill's) is a good quality food as well.
