Just got a re-homed cat. When should I get her vet checked for health?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed

I just got a 4 year old cat from a couple looking to re-home her. They got her from their daughter that previously worked at a veterinarian clinic who had fostered the cat and they say she's up to date on vaccinations, and is spayed. I would like to know if I should, wait for a health screening just to make sure things are up to date, or if there's a recommended wait time until a certain date to visit a vet? Also, they weren't able to tell me what exact breed she is.

Congrats on your new cat! I think it's always a good idea to have a new cat checked out by a vet not long after getting it. Unfortunately people don't always tell the truth, so it's best to have your own exam done. You can ask the previous owners to have Kitty's records transferred from her old vet to your vet so that your vet has the correct information. If they refuse to do this, that could be an indication that the information you received about her previous care isn't correct. Make an appointment with your vet, and speak with the previous owners to have her records transferred. Good luck, I hope this helps!

I would follow the owner's wishes. It is good to keep cats updated on vaccines, and rabies vaccines are required by law. If you want to have them examined by a vet and receive appropriate vaccines, the vet can do so without prior records. Annual exams are recommend to monitor changes over time. If the owner decides to continue with regular vet care, then you can transfer the records to the new vet.

Congrats on your new cat! You can ask for routine blood work and a urinalysis to check how her organs are functioning. The vaccines she will need include Feline core vaccines include FVRCP (feline distemper combo) and a Rabies vaccine. If she is an outdoor cat, the FeLV vaccine (feline leukemia) should be considered. I found new kittens. What vet exams and vaccinations are needed?
Congratulations on your new kitties! I would recommend taking them to the vet for a check-up when you're able to. The vet will listen to their heart and lungs, and will also check for fleas, ear mites, and other problems that are common in stray cats. Usually, a fecal exam for parasites and FeLV/FIV testing would also be recommended. If they seem healthy, your veterinarian will probably also recommend having them vaccinated for feline distemper, feline leukemia, and rabies.

The things you need to do are get all the vaccines (boosters included), a Feline Leukemia and FIV test, treatment for fleas and worms, and have his feces checked for parasites. Other potential actions are a microchip and a dental cleaning. Your veterinarian will do a physical exam and then let you know what else may need to be done. Do cats from rescues get vet checks and vaccines before adoption?
Rescues al vary in the amount of vet care pets receive. The county run humane societies seem to be some of the most thorough but this all depends.
