Just found a stray cat. How do I get him registered or microchipped?

Wow, what a tough situation for you to be in! It does happen that people abandon their pets, and it could be what happened to your cat. I would simply be honest with the vet. Tell them he turned up on your doorstep, and you kept him because you thought he was a stray. He will have to see a vet for his health, so as long as you are honest with them, I'm sure they will believe you :-)

Congratulations on your new cat! The things you need to do are get all the vaccines (boosters included), a Feline Leukemia and FIV test, treatment for fleas and worms, and have his feces checked for parasites. Other potential actions are a microchip and a dental cleaning. Your veterinarian will do a physical exam and then let you know what else may need to be done. I am not quite sure why you would need to register your kitten and with whom. You should have your kitten examined by your vet and wormed and vaccinated, and, once it is about 6 months old, you should have it neutered or spayed so there will not be any unwanted kittens. If you could specify where you think you might need to register your kitten and why, we could look into the matter for you.

I recommend to have the puppy scanned at a vet clinic for a microchip. Also check the classified ads, the website of the local humane society (if it lists lost pets) and craig's list. I hope this helps.

Hi, thank you for your post. It's great that you are attempting to find the owner and good that there is some identification. Tattoo's are usually given to feral cats when they are trapped, neutered/spayed and released. It's best to call your local municipal animal shelter and enquire about this. Sorry, but there is no way for us to find an owner. Good luck and hope you get it sorted soon.

If none of your nearby neighbors claim him as theirs, I would recommend setting some food out in a live trap. Once trapped your veterinarian can check the sex, determine if it is spayed or neutered, and proceed with the surgery if not. Vaccine status is unknown so likely you will have to start over to ensure protection.

You may want to call around . I’m our area many practices will do a new pet exam at no fee, then you can schedule for vaccines and such for next week. If you don’t plan to keep the kitty you can take to the humane society or animal control. If the kitten seems bright and alert and healthy then waiting a week for an exam and vaccines is probably ok as well. Regardless you should have her scanned for a microchip as she may be lost and her family may be looking for her. Any veterinary hospital can do this at no charge.
