My rabbit has a lump where his abscess was. Is it recurring?

This kind of lump/growth needs to be ideally assessed by your veterinarian to have a definitive and specific answer. Usually there are two ways your vet can do that a part from examining it directly during physical examination. A biopsy can be taken under local or general anesthetic, otherwise a smaller sample through a fine needle can be aspirated (this technique is called FNA= fine needle aspiration). Differentials include skin cysts, infections, benign or more sinister type of tumors. Hi, it looks like there is still some infection. I am not sure what was the first diagnosis but this looks like an abscess to me and it can be tricky for antibiotics to clear the infection. In me experience, it would be better being removed and treated as a lump, provided X-rays, general health support this decision. Abscesses quite often end up reoccurring if not eradicated completely..if you wanted to try oral medications for a bit longer, injectable antibiotics would be the way forward. Hope this makes sense.

This is probably an abscess that burst, and it is a good thing that it burst. However you should not bathe your rabbit with this open wound. Since abscesses in rabbits are very nasty and can actually come back in the same place, you should take Peanut to a vet to clip, clean, disinfect/flush the area. Your vet will also check whether your rabbit has more abscesses you may not have noticed. Please take him to your vet before the weekend.

The best thing is to gently feel the lump and figure out how big it is ( for example, as big as a cherry pit, or measure it if you can. Write this down and then measure it again a week later. If it has grown, you should take your rabbit to a veterinarian as it could be a tumor or a cyst or an abscess. If it does not grow and does not ooze nor the skin starts to turn red, then I would not worry about it, and only show it to your vet the next time you take Albie in for an exam or vaccinations.

Poor Shu! I can see that the growth is relatively large and inflamed. It also appears to have a bit of dead tissue in the center. This is likely to be fairly painful, so Shu should be seen by a vet to receive pain medication and a thorough cleaning of the area which may require mild sedation. There are certain viruses that predispose rabbits to developing masses, and while there is no cure for the virus itself, the mass can be removed to improve quality of life. If you have any other rabbits, I recommend separating them from Shu as the virus can be contagious. I hope this helps and that all is well!

Lumps and bump can certainly be scary, especially since we usually don't have any idea what they are. As long as it is not effective Poppy's ability to urinate and defecate, and as long as she is eating / drinking / having a good energy level, there is not absolute rush to have her seen. However, I would definitely get her to the vet to have that area examined as soon as it is financially feasible to do so. It is in an area of the body where if the size increases, the mass could certain become problematic. It is best to deal with it sooner than later. If the area starts to grown in size by even 10%, I would not wait until the insurance kicks in and just get her somewhere to be examined. While I realize this isn't ideal, rabbits are very sensitive to changes in their health and have the ability to crash quickly if things are not hastily dealt with. No idea without seeing Bunnicula (great name btw!), but this could potentially be an abscess, which is common in rabbits and sometimes contagious to other rabbits. I'd visit your nearest rabbit veterinarian who can take a sample of the swelling to examine under a microscope to give you a diagnosis and come up with a plan
