My rabbit was neutered. How do I care for him safely post-surgery?

You just need to monitor them closely, check the suture area once a day and make sure they are eating properly after the procedure. it is also recommended to avoid conventional bedding for the first few days, i usually recommend paper shreds instead.

Hello. Every rabbit is so different in the way they handle the stress of surgery and the anesthesia. A routine castration on a young healthy rabbit should be a quick recovery and travel would be fine. If there are any issues though, the travel schedule is not ideal. No, rabbits would not be a particularly high risk for haemorrhage following castration once performed by an experienced vet. Nursing care of rabbits to prevent loss of body heat during anaesthesia is important as is good pain relief and early feeding after recovery

Spaying female rabbit involve giving general anaesthesia (either by injections or by inhaling anaesthetic gas) and performing surgery to remove the ovaries and the uterus. The abdomen is clipped once the bunny is asleep, then a small incision on the abdominal wall is made and finally the ovaries / uterus are removed. There are usually 3-4 stitches inside the abdomen and some stitches to close up the abdomen and the skin. Most of the rabbits are back to normal very quickly after the surgery (within 1-2 days), so hopefully Oreo will also recover rapidly. You will need to make sure she is kept warm at home, she eating as normal and passing normal stools. She will likely be prescribed a few days or pain killers to go home with.

I would not recommend bathing any animal within 14 days after any surgery. If you see a little blood and can dab it with a clean damp cloth that is ok. If there is excessive bleeding, discharge, bruising, swelling, or if Fezzik is licking or biting at the site you should contact your veterinarian who may elect to treat with antibiotics, pain medications, or help you come up with a plan to prevent him from bothering the surgical site. It is not uncommon, however for there to be a small amount of redness and inflammation, even a few drops of blood at a surgical site for a few days after surgery. Good luck with Fezzick!

I would highly encourage you to have a follow up appointment with your veterinarian to make sure that there is no infection and to See if the incision needs to be revised or not. Cat neuters are one of the few surgeries that do not require stitches and most vets do not place stitches. If your vet did not give any special instructions about stitches, then I wouldn't worry about it; it's expected that a cat will be a cat. If the vet did give some special instructions, then follow them as best as you can, but stitches are often placed assuming that there will be some tension due to running, jumping and licking; so I wouldn't be too worried about him causing major damage. It's good to have a look at his scrotum every day for the next 10 days. If you happen to notice excessive swelling (some swelling is expected in the first few days), pus, or any other abnormalities, then I'd recommend taking him in for an exam by your vet. The chances of a serious complication is very small, so I wouldn't worry about leaving him for the day. They usually recover quickly after this procedure and rarely have complications.
