My older cat eats a lot but is still skinny. Why is he underweight?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 13 years and 11 months old | 4 lbs

One of my cats is Fred. He is a male. We feed him 4 times a day, but he's still "fur, skin and bones". Why is he so underweight??

Since Fred is an older kitty it is likely he is suffering from an overactive thyroid. Kidney disease and diabetes can also cause this. I suggest you take him to your vet for an exam and a blood test. Hyperthyroidism is easily treated with thyreostatic medicine and is likely the most common cause for the weight loss.

I would actually recommend taking him to his vet for blood work before trying to get the weight back on him at home. Usually, when cats lose weight without you actively trying to having them lose weight, there is some disease going on. It could be kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, or many other causes. Good luck!
