My neutered cat acts male and tries to mate. Is he still fertile?

Male cats will tend to do this behavior if they have not been neutered. If your cat has been neutered I would check with the vet who performed the surgery to ensure that both testicles were retrieved at the time of the surgery and that your cat does not have a retained testicle or is what we call a cryptorchid. Some cats fail to descend a testicle and it remains in the abdominal cavity. One of the signs that this has happened is latent "sexual activity such as "masturbation activity" such as your cat is doing. Not all cats who do this have retained testicles, but it can often be the case. If you and your vet know for 100% certainty that he had both testicles removed, then this may just be a behavior that your cat does. Your vet may have some suggestions to dissuade your cat from doing this, but it is generally nothing harmful and the cat is just acting out, will finish and there is nothing else to it. If the cat did retain a testicle, the vet can go in surgically to remove it. It is important to remove the retained testicles because they can become cancerous. I myself have a cat who does this (he had both his jewels removed successfully) so we just call it making "dirty biscuits". There really is no reason for his behavior, he just does it... But I made sure that there was no medical reason first! :) Usually I have a nice water bottle on hand and that seems to work great :)

Male cats that are neutered after they reach sexual maturity are more likely to continue to exhibit behaviors that were caused by testosterone even after they are neutered. These behaviors can include urine marking and humping types of behaviors. That is one of the reasons that we recommend neutering before sexual maturity. If the shelter neutered him before you adopted him, then I would not doubt that he is neutered, but you certainly can have your veterinarian examine him just to be on the safe side. Cats that have testosterone in their system will have physical characteristics that your veterinarian will be able to determine on exam. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. I would not be worried about it but because of that he definitely needs to be neutered. The other testicle is either in the inguinal area or still inside his abdomen. If you don't neuter him and that testicle stays inside him it is almost a 100% chance that it will turn cancerous. So, my suggestion would be to have him neutered as soon as possible. Neutering the cat with one testicle descended should be no problem if you let the vet know ahead of time so the vet can plan extra time to find and extract the undescended testicle. It is usually not a big problem, however sometimes the veterinarian has to open the abdomen to remove the testicle if it is not located anywhere near the inguinal ring. Just removing the descended testicle and leaving the other one behind would not be acceptable practice.

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sounds like Prince is still experiencing some signs associated with the male hormone testosterone. The testosterone levels drop after the neuter and should be decreasing now. Hopefully this behavior will ease up as the remaining testosterone gets out of his system. If things don't resolve or his signs worsen, I would advise that your veterinarian take a look at both of them to assess any problems. I hope this gets better soon.

Once all the male hormones have left the younger one's body, this should stop. It sometimes takes a few weeks (3+) for all the male hormones to go. Now that the younger one has no more testicles, there will not be any significant testosterone production anymore. Your older fellow is a sweetie and obviously not too worried and might see it just as play. As long as they do not have serious fights, I would not worry about it.

You should have him checked, or rechecked, by your veterinarian. Neutering typically does not result in more aggressive behavior. Additionally, any sudden behavioral change can be due to illness or injury. Once medical causes have been ruled out, you can focus on behavioral issues. Consider a pheromone product, such as Feliway Spray or plug in diffusers, to help decrease anxiety or aggression. Provide additional litterboxes, bowls, toys and bedding to prevent resource protection. You may have to separate them for a week or two then gradually reintroduce them while employing the measures described above.
