My male cat pees often, small amounts, and is restless. Is it a UTI?

Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach! With your description, I would recommend having him examined by a veterinarian and having his urine tested. He may have crystals in his urine with a secondary urinary tract infection. If he does have crystals in his urine, there is a chance he already has stones in his bladder or will develop bladder stones down the road in the near future. With crystals and stones, male cats run the risk of getting a urinary obstruction, which can be life threatening if not treated as it will cause backup of the urine into the kidneys and lead to kidney failure and other systemic abnormalities secondary to the obstruction. I would have this checked sooner rather than later because if you wait until he is obstructed, it can easily cost up to $3000 for treatment. If you take him now, it is the exam fee, urine test and treatments, which come nowhere near $3000. I hope this helps guide you int he right direction! It's not likely a UTI, cats tend to suffer from a condition called FLUTD that mimics a UTI but it's actually related to stress and doesn't involve a bacterial infection. in most cases it advances to a urinary blockage and the c at can die within several hours of that happening. you must take him to the vet urgently for treatment.

Poor guy. He likely has a urinary tract infection or cystitis (inflamed bladder usually due to stress). I would recommend taking him to your vet for a urine test to determine which is present so that he is treated appropriately. As long as he is otherwise acting normal and able to urinate at will, then it isn't considered an emergency at this point. Getting him seen on Monday or the day after should be ok. Poor guy. I too would be concerned about possible cancer. The next step would be to get an abdominal ultrasound to look for other possible causes such as cancer. Cats can also just get cystitis, which caused inflammation of the bladder due to stress. This is typically treated with a prescription urinary food and often-times anti-anxiety medication. Hello! Leopold could have a partial urinary blockage, which is an emergency! Ideally, take him to see his vet ASAP, so they can check him over. If his bladder is not emptying properly, he will need to be catheterized. Male cats of this age rarely get bladder infections, so a partial blockage is much much likely. Cats get crystals in their urine, which plug up their system. I hope he feels better soon!

Hello! I would recommend keeping his litter completely clean so you can monitor his urine output. A blocked cat will continue to return to the litter box, strain unproductively or only pass small amounts of urine that may be bloody, and often be vocalizing. If you notice any of these signs, he needs to be taken to a vet immediately to be assessed for possible blockage. Feeding wet food, fountains, and dripping sinks and good ways to encourage cats to drink more water. Urinary tract infections in cats are fairly uncommon. Usually the urinary disease is a result of a production of crystals or stones or a sterile inflammatory bladder disease. UTI in cats is painful and unpleasant but what is more, in male cats it can easily turn into urethral blockage, which is a medical emergency. There is not much that you can do at home to help Apollo, I am afraid. Increasing water intake can alleviate the UTI symptoms to some degree, so you should give Apollo wet food or moisten up his kibbles with warm water. for the next few days
