My 18-week-old kitten is sleepy with runny nose and eyes. What's wrong?

Max likely is suffering from an upper respiratory infection. The earlier this is treated the better. Sometimes these infections get chronic and therefore it is advisable that you take Max to your vet for an exam and treatment. Another problem is that cats with a stuffy nose cannot taste their food and therefore often will not eat. Cats that do not eat can get liver disease.....so it is not a good idea to let the cold run its course. It is better to treat it right away.

This is usually treated with antibiotic eye drops and oral antibiotics and cats usually respond well to therapy. I recommend that you have Deimos evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. If they agree that based on an examination, that seems to be the issue, they will likely prescribe medications to make him feel better. Hi there. It is very rare for cats to truly get influenza, but they can certainly get several types of upper respiratory viruses. You can take him into the bathroom when you shower to get him nice and humidified. You can use nasal saline drops to keep the secretions nice and thin. Kitten needs to be examined by the veterinarian today. Many cats will get viral infections that cause sneezing and upper respiratory symptoms. Some of these kittens will get viral infections that also affect the eye and can cause painful ulcers which can progress and dive deeper into the eye (which is not good). Lysine supplements for cats may help with viral infections in general but your kitten still needs to be examined today. The doctor needs to check the eye for an ulcer, scratch or perhaps a foreign object trapped under the eye lid. You must also protect the eye from any scratching with an elizabethan collar. I am sorry to hear that your pet Bronze seems to have upper respiratory infection symptoms. Cat flu is usually quite serious and involves the lower airway causing wheezing and serious breathing problems, so it is more likely Bronze just has an upper airway infection secondary to a viral infection. Viral infections can be helped with over the counter lysine supplements. However if there is green or yellow discharge then you will have to get a vet to prescribe him oral or an injectable antibiotic to treat this successfully. Any vet, serious or not, should be able to diagnose a simple URI and prescribe a short course of antibiotics no problem.
