Why are my kittens' skin raw and itchy after a Dawn flea bath?

Fleas and allergies to fleas can set-up an environment for infection. It's possible that this is complicating the recovery process. The skin will often start to heal once the fleas are gone, but it's worth treating for infection by giving a bath with a medicated cat shampoo (can get this at the pet store). I recommend discontinuing the use of the other products (except the flea control) for now, because overuse and misuse of certain products can actually delay healing or make the problem worse. For instance, I worry about the use of the coconut oil, because fungal and bacterial infections will thrive in the coconut oil. It's best to just give a bath with the medicated shampoo once every 2-3 days, until the skin starts to look normal. It's expected that it will take a month or more until the cats start to look normal again, so stick with it and they should get through this fine. Treating for fleas is not just restricted to the host, because fleas can reproduce and nest in the environment and continually cause an issue. Dish soap is not recommended for delicate kitten skin and I recommend you start her on a course of omega fatty acid supplements as soon as possible (such as viacutan) to try to replenish the natural oils and moisture in her skin. I recommend using a fipronil based flea spray 48hours after the last wash to help reduce the fleas and also spray all bedding and sleeping areas with an insecticidal flea spray alongside daily, gentle flea combing

This is probably due to a severe allergy, although it could also be fleas or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat her with a high quality flea treatment (e.g. advantage), then get her to the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try discovering the cause of the allergy. Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair the skin lesions (steroids and antibiotics). simultaneously you should start her on a prescription hypoallergenic diet for at least 2 months. Hopefully you will see some results after all this, if not you and your vet should consider putting her on a long term allergy treatment (Atopica).

Poor kitty. It is likely these were just additional fleas that then migrated to the kitties face b/c you were bathing the rest of the body. This is very common. Fleas do have a blood meal so the water will turn red when they are killed. I would recommend rebathing the kitty and gently apply it to the top of the head, use care not to get in the kitty's eyes. Then rinse again. You should also use a flea comb (from your local pet store) to physically remove the fleas that are still remaining on the face where the shampoo can't reach. Your kitty is old enough for a flea preventative, so its best to then get Midnight on a good quality flea preventative. My only recommendations for cats are: Revolution, Cheristin, or Advantage. Hello. It is a little tough to tell exactly what is going on, so if you have a chance to let your vet take a look, that would be best. Are you having problems with fleas? That might be one reason he is so scratched up. Bathing in Dawn will help to control the fleas until he is old enough for a flea preventative. If not, then I would pick up a skin cleanser like Hibiclens at any pharmacy, dilute it about 50:50 with water & clean the irritated areas twice daily. Hopefully, this will clear up quickly. I'm sorry your cats (and you!) are dealing with you. Unfortunately, once a cat has a flea dermatitis, the itching and skin problems can continue even once you get rid of the fleas. The degree of which really depends on the severity of their sensitivity to flea bites. Often, we have to use antihistamines or steroids to resolve the inflammation. Sometimes we also have to incorporate antibiotics if there is an infection. For dogs, there are topical shampoos we can use, but those are often not a good option for cats. So, I would recommend having your veterinarian examine your cats' skin to determine if there is a secondary skin infection or just inflammation in order to help you determine the best treatment.
