My small kitten is in pain. What pain relief or supplements are safe?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 7 months and 14 days old | 4.2 lbs

What pain medicine and/or supplements can Watson take given his low body weight of 3.3 pds at 7 months? He's been rather sick, and the doctor noted his back leg muscles had begun to atrophy. He's trying to move, but it's obvious he's in a lot of discomfort. Could an orthopedic bed help at all as well? I'm fighting alongside him in his recovery.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! An orthopedic bed is not likely to help though it is very hard to make any recommendations with the information provided. It really depends on what the source of her condition is. I would highly recommend you check in with your veterinarian if he has not been improving as they would know more about his condition and would be able to make more specific recommendations. General medications for pain include buprenorphine for example. If they think he is painful, they may start him on something like that. Good luck!
