My kitten accidentally took too much metronidazole. What to do?

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | unspayed | 2.4 lbs

I misread the dosage of a metronidazole antibiotic prescribed for my 2lb kitten. .25ml 2x/day was prescribed and I gave her 25ml once. she is fine now but I am scared she may become very ill.

Sorry for the scare! One mLis much less scary! (And I was wondering how you got 25 mLs Into a kitten that small!) II would say stop the medication for 24 hours and monitor. The neurological side effects are still possible but much much less likely. If she’s doing well, restart the medication at the proper dose and call it a day!

I am extremely concerned about this. That is a 100 times overdose. Metronidazole at extremely high doses can cause serious neurological signs (seizures, even death.). You need to take her to an emergency vet IMMEDIATLEY and call the Pet Poison Hotline on the way. +1-855-764-7661

She will probably be just fine. I suggest you skip the next scheduled dose and then go back to the correct dose after that. Just monitor her closely for any abnormal symptoms (usually neurological signs) and if any are noted then get her to a vet for an exam immediately.

Unfortunately no, it may not be enough to be effective. I'm quite concerned that Kaia is having neurological symptoms and that is a medical emergency. This is not something you should see how she does at home or try to treat at home, this requires a vet visit right away. I strongly urge you to take her into a vet immediately to get checked out. Is metronidazole in mom cat's milk safe for nursing kittens?

It depends if Lilly is still feeding the kittens. When prescribing antibiotics to a pregnant or lactating cat it is very important to be aware of the potential side- effect that the antibiotic may have on the kittens. Metronidazole is transmitted into mum's milk therefore is generally not recommended for lacating cats. However, there are some occasions when the benefit for the mum is higher then the risk for the kittens. Please, get in touch with your vet to discuss why Lilly was prescibed this antibiotic. If Lilly is not feeding the kittens anymore, obviously she will be ok to take a course of metronidazole.

My cat's head is jerking. Could it be metronidazole side effects?

If the head jerking is continuous then I would recommend taking Casper in to the vet to be checked out. Some pets can have an adverse reaction to metronidazole that causes neurological symptoms. If Casper had only one episode and it resolved quickly and uneventfully then I would not worry about it too much.

My cat is stumbling after metronidazole for IBS. Should I call vet?

Some animals will have neurologic toxicity with metronidazole. I am suspicious that this may be causing her symptoms. However, other things could be causing it as well. If she continues to have problems this evening especially if they worsen then I would recommend she be seen tonight. If she seems to improve then I would see your regular veterinarian tomorrow. Is Metrogyl dosage safe for my 3-month-old kitten's diarrhea?

I honestly cannot give you the dose information, even if you say you take full responsibility. It is illegal for me to do so, and I could lose my license to practice by giving you that information. I can tell you that metrogyl contains metronidazole, which is used in cats safely. If you are concerned about the dose and want a second opinion, I recommend making another appointment with a vet to discuss this in person with them.

My kitten has coccidia. Metronidazole or wait for ponazuril?

If it were my kitty I would start the metronidazole right away. Metronidazole adverse reactions are not that common and it can at least help with the inflammation of the gut that is caused by the coccidia until the proper dewormer is made available.
