The causes can easily be differentiated by the clinical signs associated with it and the physical exam findings. If Freckles is only showing some hair loss without scratching or overgrooming then it could conditions such as alopecia areata that can affect cats and usually resolves on its own. If there is evidence of scratching and you start noticing some redness or irritation associated with it, then other conditions such as allergies are possible. If you notice him overgrooming himself in that area then it could be something like psychogenic alopecia which is more of a behavioral issue. I think that since he is not having overt clinical signs and it is mostly hair loss, I think it is possibly transient and could resolve on its own. You can monitor this closely and if it does not resolve or it worsens then have him examined by your veterinarian. Good luck!

Sometimes this happens randomly, somteimes it is due to a bad tooth. The saliva has bacteria in it that gets on the skin and can cause this infection. The vet needs to check her entire mouth. Don't bother trying to clean it at this stage. Just let the vet look at it first.

I would recommend having a veterinarian examine her so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. It could just be scab or is could be another issue. An allergy, mite infection, bacterial infection, feline acne, or fungal infection could all be possibilities. You can put 3% hydrogen peroxide on the area and if it doesn't improve in a few days, Maddie may need to see her veterinarian for a few skin tests to rule out causes (mentioned above). Some possibilities (just to name a few): 1. ringworm 2. mange 3. bacterial infection 4. localized vaccination reaction (some vets vaccinate low down on the legs so check to see if your vet did this) 5. injury Since he doesn't seem to be bothered by it at this stage I would suggest you try some antifungal medication on it for a couple weeks to see if there is any resolution.
