My spayed kitten has bruising on her belly. Should I be concerned?

It is certainly concerning that Momote has significant abdominal bruising after her spay and that it has been getting larger. Some anti-inflammatory pain medications can increase a bleeding risk, but generally not to this extent. Possible causes of Momote's bleeding could be related to surgical complications with a bleeding vessel in or just under the skin, clotting disorders, or liver failure (the liver makes our blood clotting factors). If it has not yet been done, consider discussing coagulation testing to determine if Momote has appropriate clotting factors and platelets. I'm assuming that your vet gave vitamin K (not vitamin C), because this can promote the development of more clotting factors. Momote should be rechecked by her vet to reassess the bruising and perform any necessary testing.

This is probably due to some bleeding under the skin, which is not uncommon after a spay, if she is not showing any symptoms other than that i wouldn't be too worried about it, you should take her to the vet for a routine post opp check early next week though.

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The purple areas look like bruising that likely occurred due to trauma/pinching of the area during surgery. Bruising can worsen during the first 2-3 days following a procedure, so this is not abnormal to see at this time for Molly. This bruising should start to improve after another 1-2 days. I definitely recommend keeping Molly's Elizabethan collar (E-collar) on AT ALL TIMES until her sutures are removed by your veterinarian to prevent her from licking at the area and causing trauma/increasing the risk of an incisional infection. If the bruising worsens after day 3-4 post-op, and/or you notice yellow/thick, foul-smelling discharge, and/or if any of the sutures seem to have fallen out, I recommend having Molly seen by your veterinarian right away. Otherwise, I recommend monitoring the area and keeping her E-collar on. Best of luck with Molly - and THANK YOU for spaying your pet!

That looks like bruising. I don’t think this is normal and I recommend to have Kurapika examined by the veterinarian to check her gum color and hematocrit to make sure there are not signs of internal bleeding. It’s possible this is from a pulled internal suture or something other than internal bleeding but it needs to be checked. Also make sure she has strict exercise restriction. Keep her in a bathroom so she can’t run around or be jumping. She should also wear an Elizabethan collar at all times. Have her examined today. I hope it’s nothing serious and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Mabel is such a cute kitty!! A small amount of bruising around the incision can be normal, but swelling can indicate a possible breakdown in the stitches holding the muscle together and should be checked out sooner rather than later, especially if Mabel seems painful. If the sutures Di breakdown it is possible for intestines to then become trapped beneath the skin and this can be very serious. I would recommend placing an ecollar on Mabel and confining her to a kennel or large box until you are able to have her seen. Excessive activity following surgery is not recommended and can exacerbate any complications that may develop. I hope Mabel feels better soon!

Unfortunately it's difficult to tell in your picture - there are multiple areas that appear discolored but I think it might just be the picture. If there are bruises that are not associated with an incision I'd recommend taking Jett to see a veterinarian - bruising can be a sign of a clotting disorder. If the bruising is right around the incision there might not be quite as much concern, although it would be quite delayed. If Jett is painful or the bruising around the incision is progressing I'd recommend seeing a vet.

This looks like a puncture wound or a mass. It is uncommon for cats to bruise like humans or even dogs so this concerns me. I definitely would have this area examined soon. Kabuki may need antibiotics to get this to heal and your veterinarian can feel the area to see if it feels like a tumor or injury. They may recommend some blood tests also to check for anemia and clotting and his organ function. If it’s a mass then a biopsy is important to see what it is and if it needs additional treatment other than surgical removal.
