Is my new kitten's bobtail a health concern or normal variation?

Moly is adorable! Her tail does appear slightly shorter than average and this could have simply been the way that she was born, or related to other trauma. Some kittens experience tail trauma at birth if the umbilical cord is wrapped around the tail, causing part of it to fall off. Other cats can experience broken tails or other injuries that require amputation. Unfortunately, there is no way of determining the cause of Moly's tail condition at this point in time, but I think she's a cutie just the way she is! :-)

A picture of the ktity would help determine that. However, these are two very different breeds, so it is unlikely. There is likely another explanation to your kitties short tail, such as birth defect or previous injury and subsequent docking of the tail.

While there are many reports of bobcats breeding with housecats I don't believe this has been scientifically proven. It is more likely that your kittens have a gene that causes a shorter tail which is not uncommon in domestic cats. I'm not sure that I'd call it normal for a domestic cat to be comfortable around a wild bobcat and vice versa but it certainly seems plausible.

Manx cats, due to their genetically short tails, can sometimes have problems with their lower spine that can cause walking, tail issues, incontinence etc. It is a good idea to bring Tigger into your vet to have him examined to make sure there aren't any issues or problems that can be addressed to help him feel more comfortable if he's having any trouble.

The first two listed conditions are genetic. Where there is one or two genetic abnormalities, there may be more that have not yet become apparent. It is impossible to predict if she will eventually develop any other conditions. have her examined by your vet to rule out infection in the eyes or obstructed tear ducts.Keep the eyes clean using a warm, moist cloth. Pain medication may be indicated to manage the discomfort associated with the loss of her tail. Daily brushing, using a pet approved toothbrush and tooth paste, may promote periodontal health. Have the vet examine her mouth to diagnose any periodontal issues.

The only thing I would watch out for is pain in the affected leg and any abrasions from the leg dragging on the ground. Otherwise, she should be able to adapt to her malformation. I hope this helps! That being said, she could absolutely have a different father/breed than Nala and that would give different genetics of course. There are forms of dwarfism in cats as well as other growth problems. So if it seems to get worse with age or she is not walking well, certainly have her checked out by a vet. Best wishes to you all!
