My kitten was bitten by a dog. Why no rabies shot from the vet?

Pet's info: Cat | Bengal | Female | 3 months and 20 days old

Hi, my 3 month old kitten was bitten 3days ago by a outdoor dog.. I take my kitty in a veterinary.. They give her himalaya liv.52 & paracetamol.. & advice to drop betaine liquid in worms... My kitten eating normal food & behaving normally... But the veterinary don't give her any vaccine or any rabies protecting injections...

I would call your vet and ask about this specifically. If she has not yet had a rabies vaccine, she should receive one, and it would also be advisable to keep her inside away from other animals and with only 1 person interacting with her for a period of 10 days as a "quarantine," as a precaution.

Hi and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Vaccine induced rabies is VERY rare. If it does occur, you typically see limb paralysis. This can begin in the vaccinated limb 7 days after vaccination with modified live virus (MLV). However, the MLV rabies vaccine is rarely used. If your cat was vaccinated 16 days ago, she should be fine. If she has any symptoms you are concerned about, I would take her to see your veterinarian immediately.

Hello. If Beauty has had a rabies vaccination in the past 6-7 months, usually given at 3-4 months of age, then she should be protected from rabies. Keep in mind that no vaccination can claim 100% efficacy 100% of the time, so we do need to be cautious if she was bitten, or she bit someone. Rabies can only be contracted by being bit by animal that is shedding the virus. The biggest concern for indoor only cats is if a bat has gotten into the house because we do not always know if that bat has bitten a cat. If Bonnie is not vaccinated for Rabies, then she may need to be quarantined for a period of time (usually 10 days) to make sure that she does not develop any signs of Rabies. That quarantine may be able to be in your house if you don't have any other animals or may need to be at a vet clinic or shelter. I would recommend contacting your veterinarian to discuss the specific legal requirements in your area. My playful kitten bites and licks. Should I worry about rabies?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is normal for kittens to lick and bite and scratch when playing. If Holly is an indoor kitten and hasn't had any previous bite wounds from other animals she is likely fine. At 10 weeks old she is too young to have the Rabies vaccine but she can soon. I would take her to a vet and discuss your countries Rabies laws on how old she has to be to get it. In the US the average range is 12-16 weeks. In the meantime if you are nervous try to minimize handling and do not allow her to bite or scratch. If she becomes ill or dies then have her tested for Rabies. For her to GIVE you Rabies the virus has to be in the advanced stages (in her salivary glands) and she would show symptoms in 10 days. Again you are likely fine, but consider confining her in a room with food/water and litter box and do not handle her for 10 days. If at day 10 she is fine then you are fine. Then get her vaccinated. My unvaccinated stray dog bit me 10 days ago. Do I need rabies shots?

There is a usually a 10 day quarantine period after an animal breaks the skin of a person. If the animal has rabies in it's saliva - it show signs of rabies within 10 days. This doesn't not mean that the animal doesn't have rabies- just that it couldn't have transmitted it at the time of the bite. Rabies can have a long incubation period. Rabies should be taken very seriously because it is a fatal virus. I would recommend getting Tofy vaccinated as soon as possible. I would recommend consulting with a local veterinarian on what happened and have an exam done on Tofy. They can give you the necessary information. HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It means keep in the house and on a leash. Keep him away from animals and children. You just want to keep an eye on him and not expose him to anything that will make him get sick in the 10 day window that may confuse if he has Rabies or something else. Once the 10 days is up have him vaccinated and this won't be a worry any longer! Have a good day!

My cat got a rabies shot. What if she was already exposed to rabies?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Rabies laws are specific to the country. I would contact your Veterinarian regarding the laws in Russia. In the US if a healthy cat presents for a vaccine and has no previous vaccine history we give it a Rabies vaccine. It is not illegal to do so. If we find out later that is was exposed to rabies no one gets in trouble. If a cat who has been vaccinated is exposed to a possibly rabid animal we still are allowed to booster the vaccine in the US. If the vaccine is overdue we MIGHT be able to vaccinate the animal but it has to be under quarantine for 6 months. Every state is different with the laws. We usually contact the State Vet for instructions. The symptoms will not be delayed or masked. It can take up to 6 months to show symptoms of rabies post exposure. If this cat was exposed to Rabies (confirmed) BEFORE it was vaccinated it can still get Rabies and should be in a strict quarantine or be euthanized. Rabies is deadly to humans. I recommend you contact a Vet in your country for your specific laws. Good luck!

Hello. If Bella received a proper vaccination from her veterinarian, then there is no need to worry at all about your sister getting rabies. If the vaccine was not properly administered by a licensed veterinarian, the Bella might be able to be quarantined as required by your local municipality. Here in the US, an unvaccinated dog is quarantined at a holding facility ( often a veterinary facility ) for 10 days. If no symptoms, then no need to worry. My puppy bit me. Should I worry about rabies if he's had one vaccine?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If Austin has had his rabies vaccine you should be fine. But you should contact your local health department and talk to a human physician. If Austin has Rabies in the transmissible form (in the salivary glands) then he will show neurologic signs for rabies with in 10 days. Keep him quarantined for 10 days. If he dies from any cause he should be tested for Rabies if it is before the 10 days quarantine. Always keep your pets up to date on rabies and prevent them interacting with wild life and unvaccinated pets. I wish you the best!
