What joint supplement is best for my tripod cat after amputation?

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 1 year and 10 months old | 8 lbs

I have a 3 legged cat and am wondering what the best long term joint supplement would be to help support his one back leg? He is 2 years old and it's only been 5 months since his amputation surgery. He is very active now, I am just hoping to prevent issues that I know will come later on in his life.

Many tripod kitties lead perfectly normal lives without any problems at any point. It's great that you are planning for the future and watching out for Jax's health. The absolute most important thing you can do for him is to keep his weight at a very low and balanced level. I like to recommend to clients to keep their three legged cats / dogs on the thin side of normal. Your pets may not like it, but it is definitely for the best. I am not telling you to starve Jax by any means, just make sure that you never have to ask yourself "Is he looking a little chubby". If you are asking yourself that, then it is probably time for a diet. As far as supplements, there are dozens and dozens of joint supplements available. You can ask 20 different vets an get 20 different answers as to which is the best. The one I would use with my own cats is this: https://www.chewy.com/nutramax-welactin-feline-omega-3-cat/dp/101462

Oh, yay for you!!! “Tripods” are awesome. As far as post op complications, if he’s 3 weeks out and the vet at the shelter feels he’s healed well, you don’t have any complications to worry about, per se. Be aware that he can’t defend himself as well, so it is CRUCIAL that he be indoor only. He also won’t be quite as much of a “jumper” as most cats and you may find that he can jump up easily and then hesitate to jump down. If he jumps down from a height and has only 1 leg to land on, he does have an increased risk of injuring that leg; however in a young healthy cat that’s still quite unlikely to be an issue. Do not allow him to get overweight; if he becomes overweight he’s more likely to have mobility and pain problems. Other than that, he’s a totally normal cat!! You will love him so much!! Best joint supplement for a 5-month-old kitten with fragile bones?

Hi and thanks for posting on PetCoach! The first thing I'd make sure Willow is eating is enough calcium. Be sure Willow is eating a kitten food until she is about 9 months to a year of age as kitten food has more calcium and other minerals in it that is required for healthy bone growth. A great supplement you may want to consider is DHA and EPA. Both are types of omega 3 fatty acid that are excellent for healthy development for multiple organ systems such as the heart, brain, skin, and bone/joint health. Should I amputate my cat's broken leg due to low bone density?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Stitch! I think you are doing the right thing. If her bone density isn't normal then she will have a hard time healing and it will take her longer, could be more painful and put her through more. Amputating the leg will be uncomfortable for her for 5-7 days then she will do great. Cats do well on 3 legs! I wish you the best!

My cat's hip is gone. Can a pet wheelchair improve his mobility?

Most cats are able to move around fairly well on three legs, so I’m wondering if Orvar has damage to his other femoral head as well. A wheelchair does not tend to work well for cats unfortunately since most wheelchairs move forwards and backwards and cats tend to move and jump (i.e. your cat could not use a wheelchair in the litter box). You might want to look into physical therapy or accupuncture, or ask your vet about referral to a surgeon to see if there are any surgical options.

My cat's leg healed bent and rigid. Is re-op or amputation needed?

I am so sorry for all of Luna's trauma! I would recommend taking her back to the vet to be evaluated. They may be able to tell if she just has muscle contracture causing her to be unable to bend the foot if or if it's a complication in the joint. Physical therapy may be able to help in some cases but she needs to be evaluated to figure out what may best help her. In the worst case situation if amputation ends up being recommended, three legged cats do remarkably well. I have a 17 year old tripod due to an injury as a kitten. But hopefully it won't come to that. Get her re-evaluated and find out what exercises you can try to help her with at home. good luck to Luna!

How can I help my senior cat with arthritis pain and discomfort?

Cats are very sensitive to pain medication so only use it if it’s been prescribed by your veterinarian. Giving omega 3 supplementation wiill help reduce the pain and inflammation from arthritis. Switching to Hills J/D diet, a prescription cat diet formulated for cats with arthritis helps also. In addition I find massage, laser and acupuncture to be effective for pain relief without medication. Also CBD oil can reduce arthritis pain. Can I give Head to Tail Hip & Joint to my senior cat with leg pain?

Yes, this is fine to give to your cat. Just be sure to get the one formulated for cats. I do recommend taking her into a vet, however, as she may be painful. Cats can be stoic about pain, and can be quite good at hiding it. If she is in pain, she would benefit from pain medications which the vet can prescribe. Unfortunately you cannot give her any human pain medications, as many are toxic to cats and are fatal if given. I would have her seen by a vet in the next day or two. Good luck, I hope this helps!
