How to safely let my indoor cat explore outside for the first time?

I have a four year male neutered cat that has always been inside. He is very strong and rambunctious and since we have moved to a safe cat neighborhood I think he would love to be an indoor/outdoor cat. What is the best way to introduce him to the outdoors so he remains safe?

There is no fail safe way to make sure he will be completely safe as accidents can always happen, but personally I believe cats should be able to go out as it allows them to exhibit natural behaviour. Because he is an older neutered cat he is unlikely to stray too far, but obviously he hasnt had the experience of outdoors since he was young. I would start by taking him out on a harness, let him get used to your garden and outdoor sounds such as engines etc. When you come to let him off for the first time don't feed him before so he has a good reason to come home if he does venture off. Make sure he is microchipped and has an id on his collar just in case. To an extent you will just have to leave him to it, but he should be fine. Investing in a cat flap is a good idea too and make sure he is vaccinated. Good luck!

Hello, Im sure Mark would love to have some fun outside. I would start off by ensuring he is up to date on vaccines and has adequate protection against fleas and ticks. He should also be tested for FIV and FeLV. Please know that introducing him to the outdoors environment can make him vulnerable to viral infections such as FIV and FeLV as well as other parasitic infections. In outdoor cats, cat fights are also an occurrence and can lead to local infections or much more severe infections depending on severity of injuries. Finally, exposure to cars and other vehicles that Mark may not know how to avoid is another thing to have in mind.

I would start by allowing him to go out on your balcony or porch to get him used to the outside noises and environment. You can have him wear a chest harness with a leash and allow him to explore beyond your front door for a short periods at a time. When you have noticed that he feels comfortable outside than perhaps you can let him be off leash. Ensure Mark is always wearing a collar and if you haven't done so already, have a microchip implanted in him.

Yes it is ok to bring him out in the garden with you. He will likely be a bit scared at first, so stay with him. If you are afraid that he may run away, you may want to get a cat harness with a long leash so he can move around freely,

I would make sure to have his vaccinations kept up to date (FVRCP, FeLV and Rabies vaccinations). I would also recommend having him on a flea / tick / heartworm / intestinal parasite preventative. There are preventatives such as Revolution and Profender for cats. I would also make sure to have him tested for feline leukemia and feline immunodeficiency virus (FeLV and FIV). I hope this helps! Is it safe to let my indoor feral cat go outside and come back?

Possibly - especially if she is now pretty tame. If she is easily spooked or still not particularly attached to you it might not be a good idea. I recommend starting with short supervised trips outside. You should only feed your cat indoors and offer food during specific meal times to make sure you get her to come back in at night. You can also practice calling to her and giving a treat. Keep in mind that living indoors is much safer for cats and there are risks in going outdoors: infectious diseases, fights with other cats, and cars and dogs are a few of the threats. If she has not been vaccinated for the Feline Leukemia virus I would recommend completing that vaccine series before letting her outdoors where she could contact other cats.

My indoor cats want to go outside. How do I start letting them out?

I would start out slowly so they can get used to the outside and learn where your home is located. I would bring them out supervised in the yard starting at 10-15 minutes at a time, monitoring them the entire time. Gradually increase the amount of time they are outside until you feel they know their area and how to come home. At that point, I would let them outside unsupervised. I would only let them out during the day, and make sure they are inside at night. I hope this helps!

My indoor-outdoor cat goes outside. What safety precautions?

The possible things that he could be exposed to outside include cat fights, cars, dogs, and possible infectious diseases that can be transmitted to him. I recommend that you have him completely vaccinated, neutered if he not yet and dewormed so that he is less likely to get infected and affected by anything. Good luck and have a great day!

My indoor cats want to go outside. Should I let them? What to know?

The main factors to think about are risk of injury (by cars and by other cats), risk of picking up disease (from other cats, intestinal parasites), and risk to wildlife (more of a concern if your cats like to catch songbirds) VS risk of increased stress due to being indoor only and risk of aggression between the two cats because they are stressed inside. From a behavioral perspective, being outside is much better. There is way more stimulation and it's a natural life for them. From a health perceptive, being inside is probably better, but we don't fully know the effects of the stress of being kept indoors. There are definitely ways to mitigate the risks of going outside, namely vaccination for Feline Leukemia and use of flea/tick preventatives, along with yearly fecal to check for intestinal worms. FIP, which is basically feline AIDS is not one that we vaccinate for and is transferred during cats fights, so they'd be open to that if outside. I hope that helps you think through your options! There's no perfect answer.

My indoor cat is scared of outside. How can I safely introduce her?

Indoor cats typically have a safer and longer lifespan than thier outdoor counterparts. If she is happy indoors I would not encourage her to go outside. If you are able to build her a secure small "catio" cat porch outside that might be a way she can safely enjoy the outside. But cats that go outdoors are more at risk from trauma from vehicles or other animals and disease, parasites and viruses. I'd be happy that she is content inside.

Is my indoor cat safe living outdoors in the country now?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am so glad you chose to send him to your gramma. Statistically, a 5YO cat doesn’t have great odds of adoption at a shelter. So that right there should make you feel good that you gave him the best chance possible. While you can never say for sure what will happen outside, many cats transition great to being indoor/outdoor. The fact that he comes in at night will help keep him a bit safer than if he were out all the time. Of course, if he is declawed, I STRONGLY encourage he be indoor only as he’s lost his main defense mechanism. I hope this helps you rest easier about your tough decision. Best of luck to you all.

How do I stop my 7-month-old neutered male cat from escaping?

Unfortunately it’s very difficult to train cats. Unlike dogs, most of them do not have a desire to please their humans. Other than just be extra cautious when leaving the house so that he does not slip through an open door, you can purchase electric fence type devices for the house. Roxzy, would wear a special collar that will give a static correction if he approaches the boundary. Meanwhile you would set up the boundary around the door.
