Is high-fiber wet food good for cat anal gland & constipation issues?

Poor kitty. He may need his anal sacs expressed. I'd have him seen by a vet to have them expressed. Then I would give him Glandex, which is a supplement that can help with anal sac health. Make sure he has plenty of fiber in his diet. Brands of cat food I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina Pro Plan, and Iams.

In my clinical experience high fibre food is most effective in managing chronic constipation in cats. You will find many brands of high-fiber food for cats on the market. You could try Royal Canine Gastrointestinal Fibre Response, Iams Proactive Health or Hill's Indoor With High Fiber. You would have to wait about 4-8 weeks on high-fiber food to see improvement. I feed my cat diet canned canned food which has added fiber. Most any brand will work. In addition I add a tablespoon of plain pumpkin to each feeding. The pumpkin adds more fiber and most cats like it. It works well to bulk up the stool and prevent constipation. You’ll be adding additional water also when you feed the canned food instead of dry. Since constipation issues are directed at increasing water content and fiber, I would recommend sticking with the canned Purina urinary food and then adding in fiber daily with 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin or Metamucil. Also have him checked with your vet if there is ever a time he can't go at all because he may have a condition called megacolon (enlarged colon) which would require medicaiton to treat. I would always prefer wet/canned food over dry food, especially since your cat hat constipation. Dry food requires a lot more moisture to digest than wet food and many cats do not drink enough voluntarily. Start with small portions spread out over 3-4 times in the day.

Eating twice a day is better than once a day so Misty does not get too hungry during the day and she can have a better blood glucose balance during the day. A 4 pound increase in weight in a cat is like a human gaining 40 pounds. Second question: Anal gland impaction can be caused by the anal sacs not emptying their contents normal and regularly. Typically, both dogs and cats express their anal glands when they defecate. If the diet does not contain a lot of fiber or the animals is dehydrated this can cause a back up and can lead to impaction. Sometimes animals are genetically predisposed for this problem. Sometimes owner may have to express their cat's or dog's anal glands manually every few weeks to prevent an impaction from happening. Adding extra fiber to the diet can help (plain canned pumpkin works very well).
