Found a stray kitten, can't take to vet right away. What to do?

Pet's info: Cat | Manx | Female

I just found a stray kitten , I took it in and gave it a bath and fed it but I don't get paid till next week and can't take it to the vet right away ( I'll be able to by next Friday , so in about a week ) and I don't want to put it back outside. I also tried to take it back outside but it just follows me everywhere.

You may want to call around . I’m our area many practices will do a new pet exam at no fee, then you can schedule for vaccines and such for next week. If you don’t plan to keep the kitty you can take to the humane society or animal control. If the kitten seems bright and alert and healthy then waiting a week for an exam and vaccines is probably ok as well. Regardless you should have her scanned for a microchip as she may be lost and her family may be looking for her. Any veterinary hospital can do this at no charge. Hello. Unfortunately, it really sounds like this kitten needs veterinary intervention. It sounds like it may have a serious respiratory problem, possibly pneumonia. Due to its young age, without professional help, it’s prognosis is grim. The kitten should be taken immediately to the closest veterinarian or emergency clinic for assistance.

I would recommend contacting Animal Control in your area. It sounds like she is in critical condition and is suffering, and if you are unable to take her to a veterinarian you should relinquish her to Animal Control for care. The non-emergency police line should be able to direct you to the right people or give advice.

I am so sorry to hear about your kitten. I would definitely try to warm her up ( if wet you can use a blow dryer on a low setting a safe distance fromher skin and you can put a towel in the dryer and then wrap her in it, but don't jiggle her/try to rouse her forecefully as this isn't going to be of any benefit to her. If you cannot afford to care for her then I would recommend relinquishing her to a rescue or shelter who can as they may have the resources to provide veterinary care which it sounds like she is in desperate need of.

Found a stray cat? What are the safe steps for adoption and vet care?

Congratulations on your new cat! The things you need to do are get all the vaccines (boosters included), a Feline Leukemia and FIV test, treatment for fleas and worms, and have his feces checked for parasites. Other potential actions are a microchip and a dental cleaning. Your veterinarian will do a physical exam and then let you know what else may need to be done. My temporary cats haven't seen a vet. What checkups are needed?

I would follow the owner's wishes. It is good to keep cats updated on vaccines, and rabies vaccines are required by law. If you want to have them examined by a vet and receive appropriate vaccines, the vet can do so without prior records. Annual exams are recommend to monitor changes over time. If the owner decides to continue with regular vet care, then you can transfer the records to the new vet.

Found a stray dog: What are the first vet steps and required shots?

The vet will perform a thorough exam to make sure she is healthy, check her for a microchip (which is linked to a dog's owner), and will likely deworm her and give her some vaccines. Most dogs receive a rabies vaccine and combination vaccine that includes common viruses that dogs are exposed to. The vet will also walk you through monthly flea, tick, and heartworm control and likely be able to tell if Fifi is spayed and an estimate of her age.
