My FIV cat has loose green stool, pain, and won't eat. What to do?

Diarrhea can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have Archie evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Hello, sorry to hear about Greg. GI signs in cats can be caused by infections, ingestion of foreign material and less likely by a dietary indiscretion (cats don't often eat other types of food they should not). Other common causes in middle or older cats include inflammatory bowel disease IBD or even GI lymphoma in older cats. With Greg having FIV, he is even at more risk of developing infections or other diseases such as IBD. He would require further diagnostics (in addition to blood and urine tests) to confirm these. It may include stool samples and an abdominal ultrasound. Even more, GI biopsies may be recommended if your veterinarian suspects that Greg may have IBD or GI lymphoma. You may try however, offering Greg a bland diet in case this is consistent with a dietary indiscretion. The bland diet could consist of plain white rice, skinless and boneless boiled chicken, and/or low fat cottage cheese. If these help then perhaps Greg may have a dietary indiscretion and will be ok within a few days. However, if he does not improve, has persistent diarrhea, develops a decreased appetite, lethargy, or vomiting then he should be seen by his veterinarian sooner. Hope this helps and best of luck.

My favorite go to's for chronic diarrhea are diet change-hills science diet ID feline is probably my favorite-probiotics like proviable-a good routine deworming-and then occasionally a low dose of prednisilone just to keep chronic inflammation down at its very worst. You can find a feline probiotic to add to her diet or try a sensitive stomach formula food or a prescription such as Science Diet I/D. If this does not improve the stool she may need to see a vet. Older cats can get an inflammatory bowel disease and stress can definitely make it worse. It will take some vitamin supplements and daily medication but usually improves by then. If not then they will look into further testing such as an ultrasound or a biopsy.

Loose stools can be from a number of things including food allergies, parasites, underlying illness, changes in diet, etc. If you haven't changed Felix's food at all, and he's still having loose stool, bringing him or a sample of his stool into your vet for a complete exam and fecal test is a good idea to help rule out common issues.

Not wanting to eat and soft soft could indicate a variety of medical conditions: a parasitic infection, bacterial infection, pancreatitis, or inflammatory bowl disease may be a cause just to name a few. I would recommend Anouk see a veterinarian so these possibilities can be ruled out. I would be sure to bring a fecal sample with you in case the veterinarian wants to test her stool. This may be from stress, diet, or an infection she had a hard time clearing due to the leukemia. Since she is otherwise normal, you can try a sensitive stomach formula food or prescription GI formula and add a feline probiotic to the food to help her. If you notice blood or any change in her appetite, or it does not seem to clear in the next 24-48 hours, then she needs to be seen for an exam and medication to help
