My 4-month feral cat has nose scab & hair loss. Should I treat?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 3 months and 26 days old | 3.5 lbs

I have a 4 month old feral kitty at my house. he is fixed. he had a scab on his nose, it just fell off. slight loss of hair in that area and next to it. should it be treated?? thank you

Without further testing, it's impossible to determine what is going on with Felix. It might just be a scab from where he scraped his nose, and the hair will grow back normally. However, it could also be an infection (either fungal or bacterial). If there is any crusting in that area, the fur doesn't grow back normally or Felix has any other areas on him, I would have your veterinarian examine him sooner rather than later. Otherwise, you can likely just have your veterinarian examine it when he has his next routine scheduled exam.

There are a number of skin problems that young cats can have that can look like that. Some are contagious to other cats and some are not. Unfortunately, there isn't any way to know by just looking at the skin. You veterinarian can take some samples to look under the microscope for a fungal infection, parasitic infection (such as mites) or bacterial or yeast infection. Any of them can cause the hair loss and crusting that you are seeing with Felix, but all are treated differently, so you will need to have your veterinarian examine Felix to determine the best treatment.

I would recommend having Sharon examined by your vet and have your vet do some simple skin tests to determine what might be going on with Sharon. Why is my hairless cat's nose flaking white stuff and losing fur?

A picture of the skin would help a lot here to help classify what this likely is. With your description however, it sounds likely that this may be either a bacterial or fungal infection. Bacterial infections are often caused by a wound on the skin that didn't heal properly. I would have your vet take a look at the area or repost with an actual picture so that we can give you more advice on treatment. However, this likely will require oral medication due to its location and the tendency for cats to lick in this area. I hope that your furry friends skin heals well soon! Best wishes and take care.

My cat is losing fur on ears and nose with scabs, why is this happening?

I would be really suspicious of ringworm. Although there could be other causes as well such as stick tight fleas, frost bite, infections, etc. I would encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian soon. My senior cat has a black growing scab on her nose. What should I do?

Dark scabby areas on the head and necks of cats are often attributable to a complex known as eosinophilic plaques. Many are allergic in origin, and respond to a change in diet (hypoallergenic diets such as those made with "novel" protein and carbohydrate sources or hydrolyzed diets such as Hill's z/d) and treatment with immunosuppressive drugs. Some studies also point to a tie-in with feline herpes virus. Diagnosis is made via biopsy. These lesions can occur on the lips, inside the mouth, just about anywhere on the head or on the pads of the feet. I've also seen them on the abdomen. Again, it's really important to get a biopsy done, because the appearance can mimic some cancers (squamous cell carcinoma) and also some fungal diseases that are quite serious.

My cat has recurring scabs on her nose. What's wrong and how to help?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Ruby. Was she ever tested for ringworm the past? This can cause crusty lesions and the face is a common site. Typically the veterinarian will pluck hairs and perform a fungal culture. If positive, then medication can be prescribed. If this is not the case, a bacterial infection or mites could be the cause. Either way, she will need to see her veterinarian for an accurate diagnosis. In the meantime, you can place an E-collar on her to prevent any further self trauma. I hope this information helps!

Why is my 4-month-old kitten losing hair on her swollen nose?

This could be due to a localized infection. One possibility (considering the recent illness) is a form of calicivirus that attacks the skin. This usually resolves on its own within 2-3 weeks, but may be complicated by secondary infections. This could also be due to a bacterial or fungal infection. It's best to take Miso to the vet (possibly the shelter vet), so they can try to identify the cause of this. For now, you can help by keeping the nose clean. You can do this by gently wiping with a cloth and warm water twice a day. You can then apply a triple antibiotic cream to the affected area after each wash. I hope that helps and Miso gets better soon.
