My dog's stitches are swollen and red after surgery. Should I worry?

Toast’s sutures are enflamed and noticeably swollen at one end, should I be worried?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question. Yes, I would be worried because this is a sign of infection. You need to have Toast seen by a vet first thing in the morning. I hope this helps!

Oh no, it's not good that Sammy pulled the stitch out! If he had the surgery over a week ago, then it should be closed to fully healed but it is concerning that the area is swollen and a little warm to the touch. I would think as well that the area may be infected based on that description, and that will require a trip to the vet. He will need antibiotics from a vet if the wound is infected, and I'm not sure how much longer you will be on vacation. If you are going back home in the next day or two, you can wait to see your regular vet; however, if you will be on vacation for a bit longer, I would find a local vet where you are to have him seen tomorrow to have the wound looked at and antibiotics prescribed as needed. That looks infected which is why the stitches are coming out. He needs to be taking oral antibiotics. You need to keep the area clean. It will heal without the stitches holding as long as it is just the skin that is open and not the underlying tissue. So, call your vet and get them to dispense you some oral antibiotics.

You can see some redness and if the staples are tighter at the bottom of the incision, it could account for the swelling. I agree there are no signs of infection from the picture, so continue to monitor the incision for now. If the area gets redder, more swollen, and/or you see other signs of infection, then I would be concerned and have her seen by a vet. I hope this helps!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Panda's spay incision does appear to be red and a little swollen. Swelling at a spay site can be due to a variety of reasons, including infection, inflammation from a reaction to the suture material, or over-activity after her procedure, among others. I would recommend Panda be seen by her regular veterinarian to have the swelling evaluated, and start any medications (antibiotic, anti-inflammatory) that she may need. In the meantime, I would recommend icing the area as well. Good luck!

I see what you mean about the area being a little more irritated than before. I definitely see how it's redder. I don't think it's infected, so I would keep an eye on him for now. Rest him more, and if it gets redder, warm to the touch, swollen, or you see pus, then take him into the vet. I hope this helps!

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The incision looks inflammed, but this could be part of the normal healing process. If there is any discharge, OR if the wound looked better than this previously and is now looking MORE red than say Friday or Saturday, I would take her back to the vet right away. If it is steadily looking better, and she is eating, drinking, pooping and peeing normally, then you can continue to monitor it. Best of luck with Lilo.

My dog licked incision red & swollen. Are sutures open? Vet check?

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! From the photo, it looks like Milo has sutures under the skin, which you cannot see. There does seem to be a mild amount of swelling and redness of the incision, and a very slightly opened area. Swelling and redness, especially if accompanied by discharge, are signs of infection. Milo should definitely be wearing his E-collar at all times. Licking and chewing can cause the sutures to loosen and the incision to open. You can apply a warm compress the the area several times a day to reduce swelling and promote healing. If you notice that incision opens more, there is any bleeding or discharge, or the area feels hot to the touch, Milo should be seen by his vet as soon as possible.
