My diabetic cat's sugar is high. Can too much insulin cause this?

Please try to bring her appointment forward to get her rechecked and her blood sugar levels controlled more effectively if possible. It may be necessary to change her insulin type but she should also be checked for infections/inflammation etc which may be altering her ability to regulate her condition

I'm so sorry to hear that Shady is not doing well. Diabetes can be difficult to regulate initially. I would also look at Shady's diet. I have a very difficult time controlling diabetic cats on a dry food diet and find that they do much better on a canned food diet with higher protein. It sounds like Kosey's glucose is getting under control pretty well this time around as well which is great news. If you are ever worried the glucose is too low the safest thing to do is to not give any insulin so I think you did the right thing. It sounds like at this time the 5 units may be too much and you can start giving lower doses. To be sure this is the right thing for Kosey I would recommend having a glucose curve done at your vet (where multiple blood glucose readings are taken throughout the day). You may have done this in the past but it can be helpful to do it again while trying to regulate your cat. Good luck!

Never ever change your cat's insulin dose unless specifically instructed by her vet. You could accidentally do great harm or even kill her. Have Flowe seen by her vet, and her vet can determine if it needs to be adjusted. Best of luck.

Yes, it is possible with a glucose level that high that Sam has diabetes. However elevated blood glucose can occur secondary to stress in cats so it's impossible to say if Sam is truly diabetic based on only one blood glucose reading. I'd recommend taking Sam to be examined by a veterinarian. A blood glucose curve or a specialized blood glucose test called a fructosamine level can be done to decide if Sam is truly diabetic. Signs of diabetes in cats include increased drinking and eating, weight loss, poor hair coat, and increased urinating. If Sam is exhibiting any of these signs, then I'd recommend getting him checked out right away. Chronic steroid usage can predispose cats to developing diabetes. If your cat’s asthma is currently stable then I think it is reasonable to stop medication and see how the blood glucose responds. If you aren’t comfortable with this, or you are concerned she won’t do well if you stop the medications, then I would recommend talking to your vet about having a fructosamine level performed. This will give you an idea of how high her glucose has been over the previous 2 weeks. If it is high as well then you will most likely need to initiate insulin therapy. I hope this helps. This is very unlikely to happen and I do not think that you need to worry about him having severe adverse effects from developing high blood sugar from eating too much just one time. The one thing I would recommend is that you do not give him the dose of insulin tonight unless you are sure that he is going to eat as if he gets the insulin at that time without eating, he may develop low blood sugar which is very dangerous.
